Controversy:Despite all the wealth Floyd Mayweather has potentially created through his boxing successes, there are rumors Floyd is not as financially stable as you may think. After his fight with Ricky Hatton, which should have been the peak of his professional and financial career, the IRS announced that Floyd owed $6.1 million in back taxes. Soon after he was sued by a Florida real estate developer who claimed Mayweather backed out of the purchase of an $8.5 million house, he allegedly owed the first installment of $1.7 million. Just a few months later $7.1 million worth of Jewelry was stolen from his home. As recently as September 2009 Floyd was sued by JP Morgan for failing to make payment on a $528,000 Mercedes Maybach 57S. Mayweather borrowed $415,000 at an annual interest rate of 16% in order to pay for the car, he reportedly has not made the $9000 monthly payment in over a year.

On March 13, 2009 Mayweather was scheduled to face the fiercest opponent of his career Manny Pacquiao. The bout was one of the most anticipated fights in years, some were calling it the fight of the decade. Pay per view revenues were expected to exceed $180 million. Of that $180 million, Floyd was to be guaranteed $25 million up front and could have earned an additional $20-25 million based on the pay per view numbers. Not bad for one night's work but unfortunately Mayweather and Pacquiao could not reach an agreement and the fight never materialized. Instead Floyd will defeated "Sugar" Shane Mosley on April 1st 2010 and Victor Ortiz in 2011. On May 5th, 2012, Mayweather will face Miguel Cotto. On May 4th, 2013, Floyd will earn an estimated $50 million ($32 million guaranteed) to fight Robert Guerrero. That's the highest purse in boxing history.
