A new-comer to billionaire ranks, Albert Shigaboutdinov is a co-owner and co-chairman of the board of the TAIF group, a major Russian holding company that manages 96% of the chemical, gas, petrochemical and oil industries in the Republic of Tatarstan.
With headquarters in Tatarstan's capital Kazan, the company was set up in 1995 and it has since turned into a private enterprise with a total of 67 subsidiaries, including several oil refineries, two gas station chains, as well as a number of power plants chemical factories and construction companies. The major rise of the company happened during Russia's privatization in the mid-90s when TAIF became a major shareholder in most of its companies.
