Born Vladimir Sergeyevich Gruzdev on February 6, 1967 in Korolyov, Moscow Oblast, Russia, he graduated from the Moscow State University before joining the military. Next, he started to manage several shops for fellow billionaire Oleg Boyko, and then set up the supermarket chain Sedmoi Kontinent. Gruzdev decided to sell his share in the company to his partner Alexander Zanadvorov in 2007, right before the financial crisis.
