Early Life

Stephen James Doocy was born on October 19, 1956, in Algona, Iowa. He is the son of James and JoAnne Doocy, and his father worked in sales and construction. Steve is of Irish descent on his father's side and of Swedish ancestry on his mother's. Doocy was raised in Abilene, Kansas, and went to primary schools in Salina, Industry, and Russell. Later, he went to middle school in Wakefield and high school in Clay Center. For his higher education, Steve enrolled at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism. While at college, he became the first on-air DJ for the student-operated radio station 90.7 KJHK.

Career Beginnings

Beginning his television career, Doocy took reporter jobs at various television stations in Kansas City, Wichita, and Topeka, as well as in Des Moines, Iowa. His first major assignment was as a features reporter for Washington, DC's WRC-TV channel. In 1990, Doocy became the host of the NBC syndicated program "House Party with Steve Doocy," a remake of the 1960s variety show hosted by Art Linkletter.

In 1994, Steve Doocy landed his first morning show role as co-host of "Wake Up America." Two years later, he became anchor of the morning newscast at WCBS-TV, the flagship CBS station in New York. He also served four times as the live Times Square reporter for ABC-TV's "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve."

Fox & Friends

In 1996, Doocy joined the newly launched Fox News Channel. By 1998, he became a founding co-host of "Fox & Friends," the network's flagship morning program. Alongside co-hosts like Brian Kilmeade and Ainsley Earhardt, Doocy helped build "Fox & Friends" into the number one morning news show on cable, a position it has held for over two decades.

During Donald Trump's presidency, "Fox & Friends" became a favored outlet for the president, who often called in live. In a now-famous 2018 interview, Trump acknowledged that attorney Michael Cohen represented him in the Stormy Daniels hush money matter and discussed interfering with the Special Counsel investigation.

In May 2025, after nearly 30 years on the "Fox & Friends" sofa, Doocy announced he would step back from the daily broadcast. He cited the daily 3:30 am commute time as the primary reason for deciding to give up the gig. He now serves as a special correspondent for the show, reporting three days a week from Florida and other regions across the U.S.

Personal Life

Steve is married to Kathy Gerrity, with whom he has three adult children. One of their children, Peter Doocy, is also a reporter for Fox News. Steve and Kathy reside in Wyckoff, New Jersey. Steve is a Roman Catholic who serves as a lector at his church.
