Early Life and Education

Keir Starmer was born on September 2, 1962 in Southwark, London as the second of four children of nurse Josephine and toolmaker Rodney. He was raised in Surrey, where he attended Reigate Grammar School. As a teenager, Starmer joined the Labour Party Young Socialists and attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he played a number of instruments. He went on to attend the University of Leeds, becoming the first person from his family to go to college. After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws degree in 1985, he enrolled at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Civil Law degree in 1986.

Legal Career

In 1987, Starmer became a barrister at the Middle Temple. During his legal career, he primarily focused on criminal defense work and human rights. He worked in several countries in the Caribbean, where he defended convicts sentenced to the death penalty, and served as a human rights adviser to the Northern Ireland Policing Board and the Association of Chief Police Officers. In 2002, Starmer was appointed Queen's Counsel and became joint head of Doughty Street Chambers.

In 2008, Starmer was named Director of Public Prosecutions and head of the Crown Prosecution Service. He handled many major cases during his tenure, including the murder case of Stephen Lawrence. Starmer also helped prosecute various politicians for corruption, including Members of Parliament. In late 2013, he stepped down as Director of Public Prosecutions and was succeeded by Alison Saunders. The following year, he was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath for his services to law and criminal justice.

Member of Parliament

In 2015, Starmer was elected as a Member of Parliament representing Holborn and St Pancras. He was reelected in 2017, 2019, and 2024. Early in his tenure, Starmer supported the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign and pushed for a second referendum on Brexit. He served as Shadow Brexit Secretary in Jeremy Corbyn's Shadow Cabinet, and eventually succeeded Corbyn by winning the 2020 Labour Party leadership election.

Leader of the Opposition

As the new Leader of the Opposition, Starmer moved Labour toward the political center and put an emphasis on eradicating antisemitism in the party. As a historic number of ministers resigned from Boris Johnson's government in 2022, he proposed a vote of no confidence in the government. Starmer subsequently criticized Johnson's successors Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. Meanwhile, he promised to improve economic stability, workers' rights, public services, and education. After making major gains in the 2023 and 2024 local elections, Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative government. Labour became the largest party in England for the first time since 2005, although it did so with the lowest percentage of the vote for any party forming a major government in the postwar era.

Prime Minister

After his election as Prime Minister in 2024, Starmer began working on strengthening economic growth, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and workers' rights. His government ended certain winter fuel payments for around ten million people, and put in place an early-release plan for thousands of prisoners to reduce prison overcrowding. Starmer also implemented the Border Security Command to secure Britain's borders from smuggling gangs. In foreign policy, he supported Ukraine in Russia's invasion of the country and supported Israel in the Gaza war.

Personal Life

In 2004, Starmer got engaged to solicitor Victoria Alexander, whom he had met while the two were working on the same case. They married in 2007, and had a son the next year. Starmer and Alexander had a daughter two years after that. While Starmer is atheist, he and his wife raised their kids in the Jewish faith. He is a pescatarian, and his wife is vegetarian. The family has a Siberian kitten named Prince.
