He was the 47th Vice President of the United States, jointly elected with President Barack Obama. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was a U.S. Senator from Delaware from January 3, 1973 until his resignation on January 15, 2009, following his election to the Vice Presidency. Biden was re-elected alongside Obama in 2012. Biden attended the Archmere Academy in Claymont, where he was a halfback/wide receiver on the high school football team and where he helped lead a losing team to an undefeated season in his senior year. During these years, he participated in an anti-segregation sit-in at a Wilmington theatre. Academically, Biden received mostly 'B' grades, but he was a natural leader among the students and was elected class president during his junior and senior years. He graduated in 1961. Biden attended the University of Delaware in Newark where his focus seemed mostly on sports and he later entered Syracuse University College of Law, receiving half of a scholarship. During his time at Syracuse University, Biden was accused of plagiarizing pages of a law review article. He eventually received his Juris Doctor (1968), graduating 76th (out of 85 students) and was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1969. Biden briefly worked as an attorney before turning to politics. He became the fifth-youngest U.S. Senator in history as well as Delaware's longest-serving senator to date. Biden unsuccessfully sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1988 and 2008, both times dropping out early in the race. In April 2019, Biden announced he was running for President for the 2020 election.
