Tax Battle in Spain

Shakira became involved in one of the most high-profile celebrity tax battles in Europe, a years-long dispute centered on whether she was legally a resident of Spain before she formally moved there. Under Spanish law, a person can be considered a tax resident if they spend more than 183 days in the country during a calendar year, if Spain is the center of their economic activity, or if their spouse or children live there. Shakira began dating Spanish soccer star Gerard Piqué around 2011 and later built a life in Barcelona, but she argued that her official residence during the disputed period was not Spain.

The most serious case involved the tax years 2012, 2013, and 2014. Spanish prosecutors accused Shakira of failing to pay €14.5 million ($16.8 million) in income taxes and argued that she had been living in Spain while claiming residency elsewhere. Authorities reportedly examined details such as travel records, social media posts, credit card use, and even visits to local businesses as they tried to establish how much time she had spent in the country. Shakira denied intentionally breaking the law and accused the Spanish tax authorities of waging an aggressive public campaign against her. Prosecutors sought an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of more than €23 million ($26.7 million).

In November 2023, just as her trial was beginning in Barcelona, Shakira reached a settlement. She accepted a three-year suspended sentence and agreed to pay a fine of roughly €7 million ($8.1 million), avoiding a lengthy trial and the risk of prison time. The court found that she spent 163 days in Spain in 2011, below the 183-day threshold, and that the government had not proven Spain was the center of her economic or family life at the time. The court acquitted her of tax fraud and ordered Spanish tax authorities to return €55 million ($64 million), plus interest. Shakira called the ruling a personal and reputational vindication after nearly a decade of litigation, saying she had been treated as guilty for years and used as an example to intimidate other taxpayers.

Early Life

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia. The name Shakira is Arabic for grateful. She is the only child of William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado. Her paternal grandparents emigrated from Lebanon to New York City, where her father was born. When Shakira's dad was five, he immigrated to Colombia. She is Spanish (Catalan and Castilian) and Italian on her mother's side. She was raised Roman Catholic and attended Catholic schools. She has eight older half-siblings from her father's previous marriage. Shakira spent most of her childhood in Barranquilla, a city on the northern Caribbean coast of Colombia. She wrote her first poem, "La Rosa De Cristal (The Crystal Rose)," when she was four years old. Growing up, she was fascinated watching her father write stories on his typewriter and asked for one for Christmas. She got one when she was seven and has been writing poetry ever since. Those poems eventually morphed into songs.

When Shakira was four, her dad took her to a Middle Eastern restaurant where she first heard the doumbek, a traditional drum used in Arabic music, typically accompanied by belly dancing. She started dancing on the table and, through learning how to belly dance over the years, realized she wanted to be a performer. Shakira and Spanish football player Gerard Piqué began dating in 2011. He plays for FC Barcelona and the Spanish national team. He is ten years younger than Shakira.
