Patrice Wilson was born in Nigeria, and began singing when he was a child in his mother's church. He went on to school in Europe and trained in track and field. He began singing professionally as a back-up vocalist for Ibrahim Maiga. He also began performing as a rap artist under the name Pato, and toured extensively throughout Eastern Europe. He relocated to the United States in 2001, and continued performing under the name Pato.
