His first screen appearance came in the movie Graduation Day in 1981. From 1983 to 1987 Hufsey starred on the TV series Fame in which he became a major television singing sensation. Hufsey had the #1 selling poster in the world in 1984. From 1988 to 1991 he starred as Emilio Ramirez in the soap opera Days of Our Lives. During that time Billy wrote and performed many songs on the show.
His debut studio album Contagious was released in 1989 and Hufsey toured the world. He starred in the films Off the Wall, Magic Kid, Zero Tolerance, Cold Night Into Dawn, Tomcats, Crazy Girls Undercover, Round Trip to Heaven, and Graduation Day.
