Early Life
Mark Stoermer was born Mark August Stoermer on June 28, 1977, in Houston, Texas. He is the son of an American mother and a German Australian father. Stoermer's mother was a nurse, and his father was a big-band-style musician as well as a doctor. When Mark was three years old, his family moved to Las Vegas. He attended Chaparral High School and played trumpet in the school's jazz ensemble. After graduating in 1995, Stoermer enrolled at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, to study music and philosophy. He was the lead guitarist in several local bands, such as the Negative Ponies and Habit Rouge, and his early influences included the Beatles, Nirvana, Public Enemy, and Pink Floyd.
Career
While performing with the Negative Ponies, Stoermer met Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning of the Killers. He became a fan of the band, and he said in 2016:
'"They even asked me to join the band as a guitar player, because originally – at least according to Dave – they wanted to build a five-piece, possibly more like the Strokes with a keyboard. I was first asked to be a second guitar player and I casually mentioned I also play bass. And then one day I got the call from Dave."
Mark joined the Killers in September 2002, and the band also added drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. The Killers released their debut album, "Hot Fuss," in April 2004, and it reached #1 in Australia, Ireland, Scotland, and the U.K. The album was certified 8× Platinum in the U.K. and Canada, 6× Platinum in Australia and the U.S., and 4× Platinum in New Zealand. Their first single, "Mr. Brightside," was a top 10 hit in Canada, the U.K., and the U.S., and it was certified Diamond in Canada and the U.S., 22× Platinum in Australia, and 10× Platinum in New Zealand and the U.K. The album's other singles also did well, with "Somebody Told Me" and "All These Things That I've Done" reaching #1 on the Canada Rock Top 30 Chart and "Smile Like You Mean It" topping the UK Indie Chart. All three singles went Platinum or higher in several countries.
The Killers followed their successful debut with the 2006 album "Sam's Town," which reached #1 in Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and the U.K. and was certified 5× Platinum in the U.K., 4× Platinum in Ireland, and 3× Platinum in Australia and Canada. The single "When You Were Young" reached the top 10 on the charts in several countries and was certified Diamond in Brazil, 6× Platinum in Australia, 5× Platinum in the U.S., and 4× Platinum in Canada. Another single from the album, "Read My Mind," reached #1 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs and Dance Club Songs charts and went Platinum in four countries. Next, the Killers released the 2008 album "Day & Age," which reached #1 in Greece, Ireland, Norway, Scotland, and the U.K. and was certified 4× Platinum in Ireland and the U.K. The single "Human" was a top 10 hit in numerous countries and went Platinum or higher in nine countries, and "Spaceman" reached the top 10 in Belgium and Israel and was certified Platinum in Australia.
The next two Killers albums, 2012's "Battle Born" and 2017's "Wonderful Wonderful," reached #1 on the charts in three or more countries, and "Wonderful Wonderful" was the band's first album to top the Billboard 200 chart. The single "The Man" from "Wonderful Wonderful" reached the top 10 on the Canada Rock Chart as well as the Billboard Adult Alternative Songs, Alternative Airplay, Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, and Rock & Alternative Airplay charts. Stoermer took a hiatus from the band in 2016 and didn't play on the albums "Imploding the Mirage" (2020) and "Pressure Machine" (2021). He told Billboard in 2016, "I'm taking a class online right now. The reason why I'm doing that is to take a break, but not exclusively. It's a combination of a lot of things. I've been doing the Killers since 2003 and I think about a thousand shows. I just needed to step away a while from that." Mark has also released three solo albums, "Another Life" (2011), "Dark Arts" (2016), and "Filthy Apes and Lions" (2017).

Personal Life
Mark is the tallest member of the Killers at 6'5″ and has been nicknamed "gentle giant" by his bandmates. A 2017 Huck article stated that Stoermer was living in Las Vegas in "an unassuming yellow one-storey house down a quiet cul-de-sac off a busy freeway." The article mentioned that the year before Mark took a hiatus from the band, an accident occurred with their pyrotechnics at one of their concerts and caused an explosion that was "10 times louder than usual." Stoermer said of the incident, "Everyone else but Brandon and I had earplugs in that night, but he was so far away from the pyros that it didn't really affect him. I was standing by the explosion and have ringing in my ears really loud ever since. I probably will do forever unless they find a cure for it. You can only try to cope."
