He is a bassist and guitarist who is best known for playing with the band the Byrds from 1968 to 1969. He played on their albums Dr. Byrds & Mr. Hyde in 1969 and Ballad of Easy Ryder in 1969.

York also played with the band The Bees as well as the Sir Douglas Quintet and The Museuns.
