Early Life and Education
Grace Chatto was born on December 10, 1985 in London, England. She grew up in Crouch End and later relocated to Shoreditch. Chatto attended the Latymer School, Westminster School, and the Royal Academy of Music before she went to Jesus College, Cambridge, where she studied modern languages.
Clean Bandit
While studying at Jesus College, Cambridge, Chatto was part of a classical string quartet. In 2008, she met fellow student and musician Jack Patterson, who began creating samples using recordings from her string quartet's concerts. He then recruited his younger brother Luke to join on drums. With Chatto's friend and colleague Neil Amin-Smith on violin and piano and Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuka as a vocalist, the group became the electronic music group Clean Bandit. The group released its debut single, "A+E," in late 2012. Featuring vocals from Kandaka Moore and Nikki Cislyn, the single cracked the UK singles chart at number 100. In 2013, Clean Bandit released "Mozart's House," featuring Love Ssega, and "Dust Clears," featuring Noonie Bao. The former reached number 17 on the UK singles chart, and spawned a music video with Chatto playing the violin in her underwear. Clean Bandit had its breakout single in early 2014 with "Rather Be," featuring Jess Glynne; it became the group's first UK number-one single. It also charted in numerous other countries, and reached number ten on the US Billboard Hot 100. "Rather Be" went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording, and also won two Ivor Novello Awards.
In May of 2014, Clean Bandit released its debut studio album, "New Eyes." Featuring the group's previously released singles, as well as future single "Come Over," the album peaked at number three on the UK Albums Chart. Clean Bandit had its next UK number-one single in 2016, with "Rockabye." Featuring Sean Paul and Anne-Marie, it topped the charts in over 28 other countries, as well, and spawned a music video directed by Chatto. In 2017, Clean Bandit topped the UK singles chart for a third time with "Symphony," featuring Zara Larsson. Chatto directed the music video for "Symphony," which showcases an entire orchestra. Further hit singles followed with "I Miss You," featuring Julia Michaels, and "Solo," featuring Demi Lovato; the latter was Clean Bandit's fourth UK number-one single. The group's next single was "Baby," featuring Marina and Luis Fonsi and released in late 2018. Clean Bandit then released its second studio album, "What is Love?," which peaked at number nine on the UK Albums Chart. The album's final single was "Mama," featuring Ellie Goulding. Clean Bandit released a string of non-album singles after that, including "Tick Tock," "Higher," "Drive," and "Everything but You." Subsequent singles included "Sad Girls," "Mar Azul," "Cry Baby," "Tell Me Where U Go," and "Believe."
Massive Violins
In 2010, Chatto joined her father Ricky to form the musical ensemble the Massive Violins. Comprised of singing cellists, the group also counts among its members Matthew Hammett Knott, Camilla Farrant, Saul Berkowitz, and Jess Chandler. The Massive Violins perform in venues both in the UK and abroad, playing a wide variety of musical genres while wearing signature gold-sequined outfits. Popular numbers played by the ensemble include Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire," Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," the Beatles' "When I'm Sixty-Four," and a "Sound of Music" medley. The Massive Violins released their first album, "Bowing 24/7," in 2014. In addition to regular concerts, the ensemble is known to perform at launch parties and charity fundraisers. At the inaugural edition of the charity talent show North London's Got Talent in 2016, the Massive Violins were named the winners.
