Early Life and Education
Mariah the Scientist, whose real name is Mariah Buckles, was born on October 27, 1997 in Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Southwest DeKalb High School as a teenager and then went to St. John's University in New York City on a biology scholarship. Initially planning to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, Buckles dropped out of college in her junior year to pursue a career in music.
First Releases, 2018-2022
Buckles began writing songs while attending St. John's University. She released her debut EP, "To Die For," on the audio streaming service SoundCloud in early 2018. After dropping out of college, Buckles was discovered by Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer Tory Lanez, who went on to become her mentor. She signed to RCA and Lanez's label One Umbrella in early 2019 and released her debut studio album, "Master," that summer. The singles from the album were "Beetlejuice" and "Reminders." Buckles released her second studio album, "Ry Ry World," in the summer of 2021; it included the singles "Always n Forever," featuring Lil Baby, and "2 You." In March the next year, she released the EP "Buckles Laboratories Presents: The Intermission," which featured the single "Spread Thin." Buckles had a big year in 2023, starting with her featured appearance in the remix of A Boogie wit da Hoodie's viral hit "Secrets." She subsequently released the single "Rear View," a collaboration with rapper YoungBoy Never Broke Again from his album "Don't Try This at Home." Buckles followed that with featured appearances on Ryan Trey's song "Ain't Even Friends" and Tee Grizzley's song "IDGAF." In October, she released her third studio album, "To Be Eaten Alive," which was her first released through Epic Records. Supported by the singles "From a Woman" and "Out of Luck," the album was Buckles's first to enter the Billboard charts, peaking at number 93 on the Billboard 200. She made it even higher on the charts in 2025 with her fourth studio album, "Hearts Sold Separately," which reached number 11 on the Billboard 200. Moreover, the album's lead single, "Burning Blue," became Buckles's first song to peak inside the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, making it to number 25. The second single from the album was "Is it a Crime," a collaboration with singer-songwriter Kali Uchis that reached number 59 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Musical Influences

Battery Incident
In the spring of 2024, Buckles was arrested on battery charges after allegedly attacking a woman in an Atlanta nightclub. She was ultimately released on a $5,000 bond.
Personal Life
In 2021, rumors began circulating that Buckles was dating rapper Young Thug. These rumors were confirmed after Thug was indicted for racketeering and was incarcerated, with Buckles dedicating a song to him, calling him "daddy," attending his court hearings, and saying "Free Thugger" at her concerts.
