Start of Rap Career
After originally using G-Storm as his rap name, Lucas began going by the moniker Future Joyner and formed the group Film Skool Rejekts. The group released its debut mixtape, "Workprint: The Greatest Mixtape of All Time," in 2007. That was followed by the mixtape "Midnight Movie" in late 2008. Film Skool Rejekts released two more mixtapes: "Music for the B*tches" (2010) and "Mind Ya Business: The Greatest Mixtape of All Time Pt. 2" (2011). Lucas also collaborated with HeadCrack on the 2010 mixtape "Side Bettin Vol. 1," and released his debut solo mixtape, "Listen to Me," in 2011. Following the ascendance of rapper Future, Lucas dropped that word from his name and became Joyner Lucas. His first release under that name was the 2013 mixtape "Low Frequency Oscillators." Lucas then released "Along Came Joyner" in 2015, which included his viral single "Ross Capicchioni."
Rise to Fame
After signing to Atlantic Records in 2016, Lucas released his fourth mixtape and major-label debut, "508-507-2209," in 2017. Its lead single was "I'm Sorry." Lucas gained his widest exposure yet in late 2017 with the release of his controversial single "I'm Not Racist." The music video for the single went viral and later earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best Music Video. Lucas had another hit the next year with the single "Stranger Things," a collaboration with Chris Brown. He also collaborated with Brown on the singles "I Don't Die" and "Just Let Go." Lucas had one of his biggest hits as a featured artist on Eminem's 2018 song "Lucky You," which peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rap Song.
Continued Success
In 2020, Lucas released his debut studio album, "ADHD." It was preceded by nine singles, including "I Love," "Devil's Work," and "ISIS," the last of which charted in multiple countries. The album itself was also a success, reaching number ten on the Billboard 200 and number six on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Later in 2020, Lucas released his debut EP, "Evolution," which made it to number 49 on the Billboard 200. He went on to release a number of collaborative singles in 2021, including "Ramen & OJ" with Lil Baby and "Your Heart" with J. Cole.
Lucas released his second studio album, "Not Now I'm Busy," in 2024. Supported by seven singles and featuring guest appearances by such artists as Jelly Roll, Logic, and YoungBoy Never Broke Again, the album reached number 42 on the Billboard 200 and number 14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In the summer of 2025, Lucas released his third studio album and a sequel to his first, "ADHD 2." It includes guest appearances by T-Pain, DaBaby, J Balvin, and Big Sean, among others.
