Roy Wood Jr. was born on December 11, 1978 in New York City. His mother is Joyce, and his father was Roy Wood Sr., a radio and television broadcaster and civil rights journalist from Birmingham, Alabama. During his parents' temporary separation, Wood lived with his mother in Memphis, Tennessee. After his parents got back together, he lived with them in Birmingham. Wood was educated at Central Park Elementary, Center Street Middle School, and Ramsay High School. After graduating from the latter in 1996, he went to Florida A&M University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism.

Career Beginnings

While still in college, Wood worked as a morning news reporter for the radio station WBHJ in Birmingham. There, he filled in for the station's in-house comedian Rickey Smiley on occasion. This prompted Wood to launch his stand-up comedy career, which he did in 1998 as the opening act for Tommy Davidson. After graduating from college in 2001, he returned to Birmingham and became the head writer and producer of the WBHJ radio program "Buckwilde Morning Show." He held those roles until 2006. Meanwhile, Wood became known for making prank calls on various morning radio shows. Those prank calls were released on the CDs "My Momma Made Me Wear This" (2003), "Confessions of a Bench Warmer" (2005), and "I'll Slap You to Sleep" (2007).

Television Career

Wood gained more widespread recognition in 2010 when he competed in the seventh season of the NBC talent competition show "Last Coming Standing," where he came in third place. After that, from 2011 to 2014, he played the role of Roy Williams Jr. on the TBS sitcom "Sullivan & Son." After guest-starring in the first season, he was a regular for the show's second and third seasons. Wood began his longest-running role in 2015, as a correspondent on the Comedy Central program "The Daily Show." He appeared on the show until 2023, and played various characters over the years in addition to his correspondent role. Meanwhile, in 2017, Wood released his debut Comedy Central stand-up special, entitled "Father Figure." Following that, he hosted the fourth and final season of the Comedy Central series "This is Not Happening," which ran from 2018 to 2019.

Wood released his second Comedy Central special, "No One Loves You," in 2019. The following year, he appeared in episodes of "Better Call Saul," "The Last O.G.," and "Space Force." In 2021, Wood was in episodes of "Only Murders in the Building" and "Flatbush Misdemeanors," and also released his third stand-up special for Comedy Central, "Imperfect Messenger." In 2024, he began hosting the American adaptation of the British panel show "Have I Got News for You" on CNN. Wood subsequently hosted a pair of episodes of the British version. In 2025, he released his fourth stand-up comedy special, and first for the streaming service Hulu, entitled "Lonely Flowers."

Wood made his big-screen debut in the 2019 film "The Death of Dick Long," directed by Daniel Scheinert. The next year, he was in Steve Byrne's comedy "The Opening Act." In 2022, Wood played Sergeant Inspector Monroe in Greg Mottola's crime comedy "Confess, Fletch," the third film in the "Fletch" series. Wood's other film credits include the 2025 drama "Love, Brooklyn" and the Apple TV+ black comedy "Outcome," directed by and starring Jonah Hill.

Other Endeavors

Among his other endeavors, Wood created and wrote a series of YouTube videos between 2019 and 2020 called "The Coalition." They focused on the chicken sandwich wars occurring at the time. In 2023, Wood hosted the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Elsewhere, he has written op-eds for AL.com and Vulture and hosted some podcasts for Comedy Central.
