In order to do so he traveled to Bangkok, Thailand where he met and enlisted the help of former U.S. Army sergeant Leslie "Ike" Atkinson, who was married to one of Lucas's cousins. Atkinson was nicknamed "Sergeant Smack" by the DEA. He claimed he helped Lucas smuggled drugs in furniture shipments. Atkinson would later dispel claims that they shipped drugs in dead soldier's caskets, as had been widely reported. Lucas married Julianna Farrait, a homecoming queen from Puerto Rico. They were married for more than 40 years. Lucas had a total of seven children. He was released from prison in 1991. Frank Lucas died on May 30, 2019 at the age of 88.
