Cherry is most famous for being the former co-host of "Coach's Corner", an intermission segment on Hockey Night in Canada. He has also worked for ESPN a commentator for the Stanley Cup. He is known for being outspoken, his flamboyant dress, and his Canadian nationalism.

Cherry spent most of his hockey career playing in the American Hockey League. He did go on to play one game for the Boston Bruins, before coaching them for five seasons. He has been featured on the Sportsnet Radio Network and even created the Rock'em Sock'em Hockey video series. He was voted as #7 on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's list of Greatest Canadians. The CBC aired a TV movie about his life titled Keep Your Head Up, Kid: The Don Cherry Story that was written by Don's son Timothy. Don Cherry's Sports Grill has locations across Canada. He has teamed up with Pethealth Inc. to create the CherryBlue Pet Insurance program. He was honored in 2008 with the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service for supporting the Canadian Forces and honoring fallen soldiers.
