Keemstar charges fans $20 to be on his friend list or to become a moderator on BlogTV chat. He is also known as one of the most famous trash talkers in the gaming industry. He is a controversial figure in the YouTube community due to his history of feuds and hostile exchanges with other content producers. In 2022, Keemstar signed a three-year sponsorship deal with the sports betting company MyBookie.

Early Life

DJ Keemstar was born Daniel M. Keem on March 8, 1982, in Buffalo, New York. He has two siblings, and he has Greek and Sicilian heritage.

Career

Keemstar's first YouTube appearance was in a January 2009 "Halo 3" video in which he trash talked the other players during the game. In the fall of 2012, he started using the Twitter hashtag #DramaAlert, and in mid-2014, he launched the DramaAlert YouTube channel. In 2010, he was swatted by a someone who called the police and claimed that they were being held hostage in the bathroom of Keemstar's home. That year he caused controversy when he encouraged viewers to use a racial slur to describe a BattleCam.com moderator he was arguing with. In early 2011, Keemstar promoted the new Xbox Live game "FortressCraft" after striking a deal that gave him part-ownership of the game. "FortressCraft" has sold more than two million copies. Later in 2011, he held the first "Billionaire's Challenge" tournament alongside Alki David, with players competing for prizes. In 2012, Keemstar created the podcast "Bad Kids" with ONLYUSEmeBLADE, a "Call of Duty" YouTuber. In January 2016, he posted a tweet in which he said that he couldn't wait to report on the death of YouTuber TotalBiscuit, who had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. He later apologized. In 2016, Keemstar falsely accused Tony Winchester, a RuneScape Twitch streamer known as RSGloryandGold, of pedophilia after confusing him with convicted sex offender John Phillips, who had used Runescape to attract children he could sexually abuse. After realizing he was incorrect, Keemstar apologized, fired one of his editors, deleted his videos about the subject, and offered Winchester $1,000 (which Tony refused). In 2018, Keemstar launched the online tournament "Fortnite Friday," followed by "Minecraft Monday" in 2019. In April 2019, he posted a DramaAlert interview with YouTuber Etika, who spoke about death, called himself the "antichrist," and said he wanted to "purge all life." Etika also stated that "death means nothing" and described life as a "video game," so Keemstar asked "then why live?… Just jump off a cliff? If it's just a simulation, who cares?" Two months later, Etika uploaded a video titled "I'm sorry" that served as a suicide note. His body was found in the East River a few days later, and some fans blamed Keemstar for Etika's death. However, Etika's mother defended Keemstar, writing, "I wish to inform Etika's fans, friends, and viewers that KEEMSTAR is not responsible for Etika's passing and should not be held accountable for my son's actions. Etika loved KEEMSTAR's show and wanted to make his appearance on the program both memorable and exciting." In May 2020, a YouTuber named Ethan Klein posted a video exposé about Keemstar, claiming that he had exploited Etika. The video led to the termination of Keemstar's sponsorship deal with the energy drink company G Fuel. In 2023, he began co-hosting the podcast "Lolcow Live" with WingsOfRedemption and Boogie2988.
