Daniel Negreanu was born on July 26, 1974, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. His parents, Constantin and Annie, emigrated from Romania before Daniel and his older brother Mike were born. His father worked as an electrician and also sold confectionery, while the family settled in the Toronto area.

Negreanu attended Pineway Public School in North York, where he developed a reputation for being outspoken and rebellious. As a teenager, he became fascinated with pool halls, sports betting, card games, and the psychology of gambling. Poker quickly became his obsession. He dropped out of high school just a few credits shy of graduating and began playing in charity casinos and local gambling rooms against opponents who were often decades older than him.
