What Is Stedman Graham's Net Worth?

Stedman Graham is an American author, educator, businessman, public speaker, and former athlete who has a net worth of $10 million. Graham is widely known as the longtime partner of Oprah Winfrey, but he has built a substantial career of his own in business consulting, leadership education, publishing, and public speaking. He is the chairman and CEO of S. Graham & Associates, a management and marketing consulting firm he founded in 1988, and has spent decades developing and teaching his "Identity Leadership" philosophy.

Before entering business, Graham served five years in the U.S. Army, played professional basketball in Europe, and worked in the federal corrections system. He later transitioned into public relations and consulting. He has written 12 books, including two "New York Times" bestsellers, and has taught leadership at universities including Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Illinois Chicago. His best-known books include "You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan for Success," "Teens Can Make It Happen: Nine Steps for Success," and "Identity Leadership: To Lead Others You Must First Lead Yourself."

Early Life and Education

Stedman Graham Jr. was born on March 6, 1951, in Whitesboro, New Jersey, a historically Black community in Middle Township. He was one of six children born to Mary Jacobs Graham and Stedman Graham Sr. Whitesboro was founded by Graham's ancestor, George Henry White, a former U.S. congressman from North Carolina who established the community as a place where Black families could own property and build businesses.

Basketball played a major role in Graham's youth. At 6 feet 6 inches tall, he became a standout player and eventually received a scholarship to Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. He earned a bachelor's degree in social work in 1974.

After college, Graham joined the U.S. Army and served for five years, much of that time in Germany. While stationed overseas, he played on a military basketball team as well as in a European professional basketball league. During this period, he also pursued graduate studies and earned a master's degree in education from Ball State University.

Early Career

After leaving the Army, Graham worked in the federal corrections system. He eventually became director of education at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago and at one point appeared to be on a career path toward becoming a prison warden.

Instead, Graham became interested in public relations, sports marketing, and business. He joined B&C Associates in High Point, North Carolina, as a vice president. The public relations firm was founded by businessman Robert Brown, who became an important mentor to Graham. His work included major corporate and public-affairs assignments, as well as trips to South Africa involving anti-apartheid activist Winnie Mandela.

In 1988, Graham struck out on his own and founded S. Graham & Associates, a Chicago-based management, marketing, and consulting company.

S. Graham & Associates and Identity Leadership

Through S. Graham & Associates, Graham developed a consulting and speaking career centered on leadership, personal development, organizational strategy, and what he calls "Identity Leadership." His central idea is that people cannot effectively lead others until they understand and learn to lead themselves.

Graham developed a nine-step process built around defining one's identity, creating a vision, developing a plan, building relationships, making decisions, and committing to long-term goals. He has presented his leadership programs to corporations, government agencies, universities, and other organizations around the world. His clients and audiences have included companies such as Microsoft, Deloitte, Wells Fargo, Lenovo, Gulfstream, and General Dynamics, as well as the U.S. Departments of Labor and Education.

Education has also been a major component of Graham's career. He has served as a visiting professor at colleges around the country and was an adjunct professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management, where he taught a course called "The Dynamics of Leadership." He also taught at the University of Illinois Chicago.

Books

Graham published his first book, "The Ultimate Guide to Sport Event Management and Marketing," in 1995. He followed it with 1997's "You Can Make It Happen: A Nine-Step Plan for Success," which became a "New York Times" bestseller.

His subsequent books have included "Teens Can Make It Happen: Nine Steps for Success," "Build Your Own Life Brand!," "Diversity: Leaders Not Labels," and "Identity: Your Passport to Success." In 2019, he published "Identity Leadership: To Lead Others You Must First Lead Yourself," which brought together many of the ideas Graham had spent decades teaching through his consulting and speaking work.

In total, Graham has authored 12 books, including two "New York Times" bestsellers and one "Wall Street Journal" bestseller.

Community Work

Graham has also devoted a significant portion of his career to education and community development. He founded the Concerned Citizens of Whitesboro, an organization connected to his hometown, as well as the Concerned Citizens of Lake Waccamaw in North Carolina. He also co-founded the Community Alliance for Youth Success.

His book "Teens Can Make It Happen" was adapted for use in schools in the United States and abroad. In 2022, Graham received the Horatio Alger Award, which recognizes individuals who have overcome adversity and achieved professional success while contributing to their communities.

Relationship With Oprah Winfrey

Graham was previously married and has a daughter named Wendy from that relationship.

He met Oprah Winfrey in 1986 while the two were visiting a mutual friend who was ill. They began dating later that year, around the same time "The Oprah Winfrey Show" began its nationally syndicated run. Although Winfrey quickly became one of the most famous television personalities in America, Graham continued developing a professional identity independent of her television career.

Graham proposed to Winfrey in 1992, and she accepted. The couple planned to marry the following year but ultimately decided against it. They have remained together ever since without marrying.

Winfrey has explained that she came to realize she wanted the affirmation of being asked to marry Graham more than she wanted a traditional marriage. She has described their relationship as a "spiritual partnership" and has said that one reason it has endured is that each maintains an independent identity and purpose.

Real Estate

Because Graham and Winfrey have been together for decades, he is frequently associated with her enormous real estate portfolio. However, the major properties commonly linked to the couple are owned by Winfrey and should not be considered Graham's personal assets.

Their best-known residence is Winfrey's sprawling Montecito, California, estate known as "The Promised Land." Winfrey acquired the core property for approximately $50 million in 2001 and subsequently expanded her holdings in the area. The original estate includes a roughly 20,000-square-foot main house with extensive gardens and sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains.
