Robert Ripley was born in Santa Rosa, California in December 1890 and passed away in May 1949. He was best known for creating the Ripley's Believe It or Not! franchise which has included a newspaper panel series, radio show, and television series. Ripley would feature little known facts that were exotic or unusual. He would include items submitted by readers which he would draw based on submitted photographs. Ripley was New York State handball champion in 1926 and published a guide to the game. Believe It or Not! made its syndicated debut in 17 papers worldwide in 1929. The same year Ripley brought attention to the fact that America had no national anthem in his cartoon which led President Herbert Hoover to sign into law "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the US national anthem. Ripley was featured on radio for 14 years starting in 1930. In 1933 he opened his first museum called the Odditorium in Chicago, Illinois. He was voted the most popular man in America by the New York Times. His cartoon series was said to have 80 million readers worldwide and to receive more mail than the President of the United States. Robert Ripley passed away on May 27, 1949 from a heart attack at the age of 58.
