Mort Walker, also known as Addison Morton Walker, was born in El Dorado, Kansas, and grew up in Kansas City, Missouri. He began drawing comics early, and his first comic was published when he was just eleven. He sold his first cartoon when he was 12, and was regularly featured in a variety of magazines by the time he was 14. He became the Chief Editorial Designer for Hallmark Cards when he was 18. He served in the US Army from 1943 to 1947, and then graduated from the University of Missouri. He published a one-panel series called, "Spider", in The Saturday Evening Post. This series became the basis for his most popular comic strip, "Beetle Bailey". At its most popular, "Beetle Bailey" was read by 200 million people per day. He also launched the spin-off comics, "Hi and Lois", "Boner's Ark", "Sam's Strip", and "Sam and Silo", among many others.
