Goines lied about his age and joined the Air Force at 15 years old. He fought in the Korean War and developed a heroin addiction. He was sent to prison many times for crimes including pimping and theft to support his addiction. While serving in Michigan's Jackson Penitentiary Goines started writing. He wrote at an accelerated pace to support his drug addictions and to avoid committing crimes. His novels include Dopefiend, Whoreson, Black Gangster, Street Players, White Man's Justice, Black Man's Grief, Black Girl Lost, Eldorado Red, Swamp Man, Never Die Alone, Cry Revenge, Daddy Cool, and Inner City Hoodlum. He also authored the four part Kenyatta series under the pseudonym Al C. Clark. His book Crime Partners was turned into a movie in 2001 and his 2004 book Never Die Alone was released in 2004 and starred DMX. Donald Goines and his common-law wife passed away on October 21, 1974 as a result of a homicide. Goines was 37 years old.
