What is David Gregory's Net Worth and Salary?

David Gregory is an American journalist and television personality who has a net worth of $16 million. After serving as the NBC News Chief White House Correspondent from 2001 to 2008, David Gregory was the moderator on the NBC Sunday morning talk show "Meet the Press" from 2008 to 2014. Gregory went on to become a political analyst on CNN in 2016.

Early Life and Education

David Gregory was born on August 24, 1970 in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California to Irish Catholic mother Carolyn, an account manager, and Jewish father Don, a theater producer. He was raised in Encino and Van Nuys, and was educated at Birmingham High School. For his higher education, Gregory went to American University in Washington, DC, earning his BA in international studies from the School of International Service in 1992.

Career Beginnings

Gregory began his broadcast journalism career at the age of 18 when he worked as a summer reporter for KGUN-TV in Tucson, Arizona. He also worked for KCRA-TV, the NBC affiliate in Sacramento, California.

In 2000, Gregory was assigned by NBC to cover the presidential campaign of George W. Bush. He soon became close with Bush, who even threw him a party for his 30th birthday. Following Bush's election, Gregory was named the NBC News Chief White House Correspondent. He served in that role until late 2008.

Meet the Press

After stepping down as NBC News Chief White House Correspondent in late 2008, Gregory became the new moderator of NBC's Sunday morning talk show "Meet the Press." Under his tenure, the show's ratings declined significantly, falling to their lowest in over two decades. As a result, a brand consultant was hired by NBC to assess Gregory. The move did little to help, as Gregory parted ways with NBC in the summer of 2014. He was succeeded as "Meet the Press" moderator by Chuck Todd.

NBC Salary

David Gregory earned $4 million per year as the moderator and senior on-air journalist for Meet the Press on NBC News. In August 2014, as his ratings declined and the network prepared to replace him with Chuck Todd, NBC reportedly paid him an additional $4 million to secure a quiet exit, covering the remainder of his contract and including a nondisparagement clause.

Other Broadcast Roles

Between 2003 and 2014, Gregory served as a substitute co-anchor for Lester Holt on NBC's "Weekend Today." Meanwhile, between 2005 and 2014, he filled in for Matt Lauer on "Today" and was a substitute host on "NBC Nightly News." In 2008, Gregory hosted the MSNBC program "Race for the White House," a panel discussion show covering the presidential race. He also served as an anchor for MSNBC during the presidential debates. Following the 2008 election of Barack Obama, "Race for the White House" was renamed "1600 Pennsylvania Avenue" and Gregory was replaced by David Shuster. Later, for the presidential election in 2016, Gregory was hired by CNN as a political analyst. He has continued working for CNN in the years since.

Controversies

In late 2012, Gregory generated controversy when he displayed a high-capacity firearm magazine on an episode of "Meet the Press." Although NBC had requested permission from the Metropolitan Police Department to do this, the request was denied. The display violated a DC code prohibiting the possession of high-capacity magazines, and an inquiry by the MPD was subsequently launched. The investigation was eventually turned over to DC's attorney general, who decided not to prosecute Gregory or NBC.

Gregory caused more controversy in 2013 when he posed a question to journalist Glenn Greenwald that was characterized by some outlets as "gotcha journalism." The Los Angeles Times claimed that Gregory's question "disguised a loaded assumption" that Greenwald had aided and abetted NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Gregory went on to ask Greenwald why he shouldn't "be charged with a crime." The accusation became a news story, with op-ed columnist Frank Rich impugning Gregory's journalistic credentials.

Personal Life

In mid-2000, Gregory married Beth Wilkinson, a lawyer, former Fannie Mae executive vice president, and former corporate secretary. They had first met when Gregory was reporting on the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995 and Wilkinson was prosecuting the case. The couple has three children.

In 2015, Gregory published his book "How's Your Faith?," which discusses his interfaith relationship with Judaism and Christianity, and his marriage to a Methodist wife.

Real Estate

In July 2024, David and Beth paid $6.6 million for a three-bedroom condo in New York City.
