Early Life

Margaret Colleen Fennell was born on December 11, 1979, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, and grew up in Saltillo.

She graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in social work.

Before becoming an author, Hoover worked in social work and teaching-related positions. She did not begin seriously pursuing fiction until her early 30s.

"Slammed" and Self-Publishing

Hoover began writing "Slammed" in 2011 without initially intending to pursue a conventional publishing career.

She self-published the novel in January 2012 so friends and family could read it electronically. Positive reviews and word of mouth caused sales to accelerate.

"Slammed" and its sequel, "Point of Retreat," both appeared on the New York Times bestseller list.

The success attracted traditional publishers, and Hoover signed with Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.

The novel draws on experiences within Hoover's family and addresses domestic abuse through the relationship between Lily Bloom and Ryle Kincaid.

Although successful upon release, the book became dramatically more popular several years later through TikTok's BookTok community.

By August 2026, "It Ends with Us" had sold more than 10 million copies in the United States and an additional five million internationally.

Hoover followed the novel with "It Starts with Us" in 2022.

Her broader catalog experienced similar renewed interest. U.S. sales across her books jumped from 1.9 million copies in 2021 to 14.3 million in 2022.

Film Adaptations

Hoover sold film rights to several of her books before her BookTok explosion, including seven-figure deals for "It Ends with Us," "Regretting You," and "Verity."

The film version of "It Ends with Us" arrived in 2024 starring Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni. The movie grossed roughly $350 million worldwide.

"Regretting You" followed in 2025 and grossed around $90 million.

Hoover became substantially more involved in later adaptations. She co-wrote and produced "Reminders of Him" and co-founded HeartBones Entertainment to gain more control over how her work reaches the screen.
