Vijay is an Indian actor and politician who has a net worth of $65 million.

Also known as Thalapathy Vijay and, in politics, C. Joseph Vijay, he became one of the biggest stars in the history of Tamil cinema before making an extraordinary transition into elected office. Over a film career spanning more than three decades, Vijay evolved from a romantic leading man into one of India's highest-paid and most commercially successful actors. His best-known films include "Ghilli," "Thuppakki," "Kaththi," "Mersal," "Sarkar," "Master," "Leo," and "The Greatest of All Time."

Vijay entered politics by founding Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, commonly known as TVK, in 2024. Two years later, TVK emerged as the largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, winning 108 seats. Vijay personally won races in both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East before retaining the Perambur seat, and in May 2026, he was sworn in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Early Life

Chandrasekaran Joseph Vijay was born on June 22, 1974, in Madras, now known as Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His father, S. A. Chandrasekaran, became a successful Tamil film director, while his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, is a playback singer and writer.

Vijay attended Loyola College in Chennai and studied toward a degree in visual communications but left before completing his degree in order to focus on acting.

Acting Career

Vijay appeared onscreen as a child before making his debut as a leading actor in his father's 1992 film "Naalaiya Theerpu." His early career included a succession of romantic dramas, and his breakthrough came with the 1996 film "Poove Unakkaga."

He cemented his popularity with films including "Love Today," "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai," and "Thulladha Manamum Thullum." During the 2000s, Vijay increasingly moved toward action-oriented mass-market films. "Ghilli," released in 2004, became one of his defining successes and helped establish the screen persona that would dominate much of his subsequent career.

Vijay's later films included "Pokkiri," "Thuppakki," "Kaththi," "Theri," "Mersal," "Sarkar," "Bigil," "Master," "Beast," "Varisu," and "Leo." By the latter portion of his acting career, he ranked among India's highest-paid film stars.

Vijay's political filings provide a rare look at the finances of a major movie star. In his 2026 election affidavit, Vijay disclosed approximately ₹410.6 crore ($43.1 million) worth of movable assets and ₹220.2 crore ($23.1 million) of real estate and other immovable property in his own name.

His finances were strikingly conservative for someone with such enormous annual earnings. Vijay disclosed more than ₹213 crore ($22.3 million) in a single savings account at Indian Overseas Bank, along with ₹100 crore ($10.5 million) in fixed deposits spread among Axis Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, HDFC Bank, and State Bank of India. By comparison, he reported owning less than ₹20 lakh ($21,000) worth of shares.

Vijay also disclosed approximately ₹75.5 crore ($7.9 million) in loans and advances made to individuals, companies, charitable trusts, and family members.

His income-tax filings demonstrate the scale of his film-era earnings. Vijay declared total income of ₹105.7 crore ($11.1 million) for the 2021-22 financial year, ₹198.7 crore ($20.8 million) the following year, ₹237.5 crore ($24.9 million) for 2023-24, and ₹184.5 crore ($19.3 million) for 2024-25.

Real Estate and Cars

Vijay's election affidavit listed roughly ₹220 crore ($23.1 million) worth of real estate in his name. His holdings have included residential, commercial, and undeveloped properties across Chennai and elsewhere in Tamil Nadu.

Among his residential assets was a property in Neelankarai with approximately 17,100 square feet of land and more than 18,000 square feet of built space. His filings valued that property at ₹20 crore ($2.1 million). He also disclosed a Mylapore residential property valued at ₹45 crore ($4.7 million) and several additional residential properties.

His commercial and land holdings included property in Thyagaraya Nagar valued at ₹35 crore ($3.7 million) and a roughly 2.3-acre parcel in Koppur acquired in 2023 for approximately ₹35.8 crore ($3.8 million).

Vijay also disclosed a vehicle collection worth approximately ₹13.5 crore ($1.4 million), including BMW, Lexus, and Toyota models as well as a custom Tata caravan.

Political Career

In February 2024, Vijay announced the formation of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Rather than contesting that year's national parliamentary election, the new party concentrated on building an organization ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu state election.

Vijay married Sangeetha Sornalingam in 1999. They have two children, a son named Jason Sanjay and a daughter named Divya Shasha.
