DeGeneres executive produced the Showtime series "Inside Comedy" from 2012 to 2015, and he was a supervising producer on Zach Galifianakis' 2002 VH1 program "Late World with Zach." He has written episodes of the TV series "Eerie, Indiana," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ellen," and "Gary the Rat." Vance was a correspondent for the Comedy Central series "The Daily Show" from 1999 to 2001. He was also a member of Cowboy Mouth and appeared on " The Ellen DeGeneres Show" in 2006 to perform with the band. Vance signed a television development deal with Telepictures Productions.
Early Life
Vance DeGeneres was born Vance Elliott DeGeneres on September 2, 1954, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is the son of Elliott and Betty DeGeneres and the older brother of Ellen DeGeneres. Betty and Elliott divorced in 1973, after which Ellen moved to Atlanta with their mother. Vance stayed with their father in New Orleans.
Career
DeGeneres spent two years in the Marine Corps, achieving the rank of corporal. He then hosted the "New Wave New Orleans" radio show on WQUE-FM in the late '70s. Around this time, Vance also played bass guitar for the new wave band The Cold; he wrote songs for them as well. In 2018, the band was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. In the mid-1980s, DeGeneres and Gina Schock (of The Go-Go's) co-founded a rock band called House of Schock. Vance co-created the "Saturday Night Live" character Mr. Bill with Walter Williams, and he originally played Mr. Hands in the sketches. DeGeneres filed a lawsuit against Williams for "half the proceeds from the shows and products," and though a judge ruled in Williams' favor, Vance was awarded 25% of the profits. The judge also ordered Williams to refile the copyrights for the characters Mr. Bill, Mr. Hands, Sluggo, and Spot, adding DeGeneres' name as a co-creator. Vance later reprised the role of Mr. Hands in 1993's "Mr. Bill Goes to Washington" and 1995's "Oh Noooooo! It's Mr. Bill's 20th Anniversary."

From 1996 to 1997, he wrote for his sister's ABC sitcom "Ellen" (he also appeared in two episodes), and in 1998, he wrote for the UPN series "Hits." Vance has written for award shows as well, such as the Emmy Awards, Academy Awards, and Grammy Awards. He played guitar and keyboards for the band Cowboy Mouth in 1998, and he performed the song "The Avenue" with the group on a 2006 episode of "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." From 1999 to 2001, DeGeneres served as a correspondent on the Comedy Central series "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," and he was later the co-president of fellow "Daily Show" alum Steve Carell's production company, Carousel Productions. With Carousel, Vance executive produced the 2011 romantic comedy "Crazy Stupid Love" and the 2013 comedy "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone." "Crazy Stupid Love," which starred Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and Emma Stone, grossed $145 million at the box office and received a Critics Choice Award nomination for Best Comedy Movie and a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite Comedy Movie. "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" starred Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, and Jim Carrey, and it earned a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Movie: Comedy. DeGeneres had a small role in the film as a reporter.
From 2012 to 2015, Vance executive produced the Showtime series "Inside Comedy," which was hosted by David Steinberg. In 2019, DeGeneres began producing the SiriusXM Comedy Greats program "Have You Heard The One About," which Steinberg co-hosted with writer/producer Alan Zweibel. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Vance co-created the web series "Rick Springfield & Vance DeGeneres Present the Miniseries: the 60 Second Guide to Songwriting with a Partner." The duo co-wrote the songs "Welcome to Your Bright New World" and "The Wall Will Fall" and donated the proceeds from sales to Feeding America. Springfield said of the project, "When Vance and I decided to try a parody of two musicians trying to write a song from our homes while in isolation, we were just looking for some laughs and a diversion from the stay-at-home rules here in California. The next thing we know we're getting thousands of views and amazing comments from my fans loving the episodes and saying they wanted more and more."
Personal Life
Vance and his first wife, Mimi, were married from 1990 to 1991. On August 17, 2013, he married Joanna Brooks, a headshot photographer and former actress. The ceremony took place at the Ojai Valley Inn & Spa, and guests included Vance's sister, Ellen DeGeneres, and her wife, Portia de Rossi, as well as Steve Carell.
In 2020, Vance publicly defended Ellen over allegations of a "toxic workplace environment" on her daytime talk show. He wrote on social media, "If you think Ellen would knowingly allow bullying or racism on her show, you don't know my sister. She has been and continues to be a bright light in a dark world. She's one of the kindest, most generous people you'll ever meet. And one of the funniest."
