In 1967 he released the single "I'll Slip Away" under the name Rod Riguez. With Sussex Records he recorded the albums Cold Fact in 1970 and Coming from Reality in 1971 under the name Rodriguez. The albums did not sell well in the U.S. and Rodriguez was dropped by the label before he could complete his third album. He quit his music career and worked in demolition and production line work and even ran for city council. Unknown to Rodriguez his music became successful in South Africa and Australia. At one point in time he was possibly more famous than Elvis Presley in South Africa and there were rumors that he committed suicide in the 1970s. The 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man featured two fans' journey to Cape Town of find out if Sixto was alive or dead and what had become of him. The soundtrack for the film made it to #1 and was certified Gold in Sweden. His two studio albums were re-released in 2012 and cracked the top 20 in Denmark, Sweden, and New Zealand.
