Whalen moved to California to attend the University of California, Los Angeles. After graduating, he studied acting and improvisation while performing with groups including the Groundlings and Playhouse West. Like many aspiring actors, he supported himself by waiting tables.

Commercial Breakthrough

Whalen began booking commercials before establishing himself in film. His most famous advertisement became the first commercial in the California Milk Processor Board's "Got Milk?" campaign.

In the commercial, which was directed by Michael Bay, Whalen plays a collector surrounded by memorabilia related to the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. When a radio station calls and asks him to identify who shot Hamilton, he knows the answer but cannot speak clearly because he has eaten a peanut-butter sandwich and has no milk.

The commercial won advertising awards and remained widely remembered decades later.

Film Career

Whalen made his film breakthrough as Roach in the 1991 Wes Craven horror film "The People Under the Stairs." His unusual physical performance made the character one of the film's most memorable figures.
