In 1996 his Pulitzer winning play "Buried Child" was awarded the Tony Award for Best Play. Arguably the high point of Shepard's career was in 1986 when his play "Fool for Love" was being made into a film by Robert Altman, hi play "Lie of the Mind" was being produced Off-Broadway, and he was married to Academy Award winning actress Jessica Lange.
