Early Life

Morris Day was born Morris Eugene Day on December 13, 1956, in Springfield, Illinois. Morris grew up in Minnesota and attended high school with Prince. The two were in the band Grand Central together as teenagers.

Music Career

Prince had a clause in his Warner Bros. contract that allowed him to recruit artists for the label and produce their music. He formed The Time in 1981 and recruited Day to be the band's lead singer. Prince produced The Time's first four albums, "The Time" (1981), "What Time Is It?" (1982), "Ice Cream Castle" (1984), and "Pandemonium" (1990), and the band appeared in his 1984 film "Purple Rain." "The Time" reached #7 on the "Billboard" Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and the singles "Get It Up" and "Cool" were top 10 hits on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "What Time Is It?" reached #2 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and #26 on the "Billboard" 200 chart and featured the hit single "777-9311," which peaked at #2 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. "Ice Cream Castle" reached #24 on the "Billboard" 200 chart and #3 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and the single "Jungle Love" charted on the "Billboard" Hot 100 chart (#20), Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (#6), and Dance Club Songs chart (#9). In 1985, Day decided to pursue a solo career, as did fellow band member Jesse Johnson, and The Time disbanded. Morris' first two solo albums, 1985's "Color of Success" and 1987's "Daydreaming," reached #7 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and the top 50 on the "Billboard" 200 chart. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, Day had a #1 hit with the 1987 single "Fishnet," and the 1985 single "The Oak Tree" reached #3.

The Time reunited in 1990 for the "Graffiti Bridge" film and soundtrack, and they released the album "Pandemonium" that July. "Pandemonium" was the band's highest-charting album on the "Billboard" 200, peaking at #18. It also reached #9 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and the single "Jerk Out" reached the top 10 on the "Billboard" Hot 100 chart (#9), Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart (#1), and Dance Club Songs chart (#6). In 1992, Day released his third solo album, "Guaranteed," and he followed it with "It's About Time" in 2004. Several members of The Time reunited to appear in the 2001 film "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and perform at The 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, and in 2011, they changed their name to The Original 7ven and released the album "Condensate." After Prince's death in April 2016, the band took part in tributes to him at London's Eventim Apollo Hammersmith and the 2017 Grammy Awards. In 2022, Morris released the album "Last Call" and announced that he was planning to retire after completing his 2023 tour.

Film and Television Career

In 1988, Day co-starred with Richard Pryor in the film "Moving" and appeared in the TV pilot "Heart and Soul." He guest-starred on "227" in 1989, and in 1990, he starred as Lamarr on the ABC sitcom "New Attitude" alongside future Emmy-winner Sheryl Lee Ralph and co-starred with Andrew Dice Clay, Wayne Newton, and Priscilla Presley in the film "The Adventures of Ford Fairlane." Morris then appeared in the films "Hotel Dicks" (1991), "A Woman Like" (1997), "Boys Klub" (2001), and "West from North Goes South" (2004) and guest-starred on "Moesha" (1997) and "Eve" (2004). In 2004, he voiced Zorch on the animated WB series "Da Boom Crew," and from 2007 to 2008, he led the house band on the TV One late night talk show "Baisden After Dark."

Personal Life

Morris married Judith Jones on June 1, 1986, and they welcomed three children, Derran, Evan, and Tionna, before divorcing in 2011. After the divorce, Day married his second wife, Lorena. In March 2022, Morris announced that the Prince Estate told him that he was no longer allowed to use the Morris Day and the Time name. Morris wrote on social media, "I've given 40 years of my life building up a name and legacy that Prince and I came up with. A name that while he was alive, he had no problem with me using. I literally put my blood, sweat, and tears into bringing value to that name. In fact, he booked me on several tours, and many jam packed nights at Paisley Park, under the name Morris Day & The Time. Not once ever saying to me that I couldn't use that name configuration." The dispute came about after Day tried to trademark the Morris Day and the Time name.

Real Estate

In 2019, Day paid $2.5 million for a 6,000 square foot home in Orange County, California. He put the six-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home on the market for $3.1 million in March 2021. The home was built in 1990, and the 1.93-acre property features a fountain, swimming pool, spa, and a "covered outdoor living room with a fireplace and TV." He ultimately accepted $2.9 million in June 2021.

In July 2020 Morris paid $1.35 million for a 6,500 square foot mansion in Las Vegas.
