Early Life and Education

Julianne Nicholson was born on July 1, 1971 in Medford, Massachusetts as the eldest of four children of Kate and James. She was educated at Arlington Catholic High School. After graduating, Nicholson became a model in New York, and later modeled in Paris. She subsequently returned to New York and attended Hunter College for two years.

Television Career

Nicholson began acting on television in 1997, when she had a guest role on the ABC series "Nothing Sacred." After appearing in episodes of "Dellaventura" and "New York Undercover" in 1998, she was in the Stephen King ABC miniseries "Storm of the Century" in early 1999. Nicholson had her first main role on television in 2000, on the short-lived NBC supernatural thriller series "The Others." After that, she played the main role of Jenny Shaw on the fifth and final season of the Fox series "Ally McBeal," and played the main role of Dr. Jules Keating on the short-lived CBS series "Presidio Med." Nicholson went on to appear in two episodes of "ER" in 2004. She had her next main role, as ADA Christina Finn, on the short-lived NBC series "Conviction," which aired in 2006. That year, Nicholson began her longest-running role yet, as Detective Megan Wheeler on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." She played the character from season six to eight, leaving the show in 2009. Nicholson next appeared in an episode of "Royal Pains" in 2011, the same year she began playing the recurring role of Esther Randolph on the HBO series "Boardwalk Empire." Nicholson remained on the latter show until 2013.

Nicholson debuted on the big screen in 1998. She appeared in a few films that year, including the drama "One True Thing" and the romantic comedy "Curtain Call." Her film breakthrough came the next year, in the romantic comedy "The Love Letter," based on the novel by Cathleen Schine. At the dawn of the new millennium, Nicholson appeared in the short film "Hero" and the feature films "Passion of Mind" and "Tully." For the latter, she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. Over the subsequent years, Nicholson acted in such films as "I'm with Lucy," "Seeing Other People," "Little Black Book," and "Kinsey." In 2006, she starred opposite Justin Kirk in "Flannel Pajamas" and had supporting roles in "Puccini for Beginners" and "Two Weeks." After a break from the big screen, Nicholson returned in 2009 with parts in "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" and "Staten Island," the directorial debuts of John Krasinski and James DeMonaco, respectively.

In 2010, Nicholson starred opposite James Franco in "Shadows and Lies." She next appeared in the 2012 film "Keep the Lights On."
