Johnny Lever was born John Prakash Rao Janumala on August 14, 1957, in what is now Andhra Pradesh, India. His family moved to Mumbai, where he grew up in difficult financial circumstances and spent part of his childhood in the Dharavi area.

Lever left school at a young age and took jobs to help support his family. He became skilled at mimicry and began performing informally before turning comedy into a profession.

Hindustan Lever and Stand-Up Comedy

Lever worked at Hindustan Lever, the consumer-goods company now known as Hindustan Unilever. He entertained coworkers by imitating managers and other personalities, and his association with the company helped inspire the stage name "Johnny Lever."

He began performing professionally in orchestras and stage shows, eventually joining performances associated with the celebrated music-directing duo Kalyanji-Anandji. Lever toured internationally and built a reputation as a mimic and stand-up comedian at a time when stand-up was not yet an established mainstream entertainment industry in India.

Lever began receiving movie roles in the 1980s, with Sunil Dutt helping provide an early opportunity in "Dard Ka Rishta." By the following decade, he had become one of Bollywood's most in-demand comic performers.

His role in the Shah Rukh Khan thriller "Baazigar" became one of his signature performances. Lever followed with memorable appearances in films including "Raja Hindustani," "Judaai," "Deewana Mastana," "Dulhe Raja," "Kuch Kuch Hota Hai," "Baadshah," and "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham."

Lever won the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for "Deewana Mastana" and again the following year for "Dulhe Raja." He accumulated numerous additional Filmfare nominations and continued working in films, television, streaming productions, and live comedy as the nature of comedy in Hindi cinema changed.

Personal Life and Real Estate

Johnny married Sujatha in 1984. They have two children, Jamie and Jesse. Jamie Lever followed her father into entertainment and developed a career as a comedian and actress.

Lever has lived for decades in Mumbai's Lokhandwala neighborhood. He has said that he bought the upper portion of his duplex in 1990 for ₹20 lakh and later acquired the lower portion for ₹4 crore. The property represented a dramatic change from his childhood in Mumbai's chawls and slums and has remained his longtime family home.
