Johnny Depp has been one of Hollywood's most recognizable and highly paid stars for more than three decades. His films have grossed more than $3.7 billion in North America and over $10 billion worldwide, while his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise made him one of the defining movie stars of the 2000s. Early Life

John Christopher Depp II was born on June 9, 1963, in Owensboro, Kentucky. He is the youngest of four children. His family moved frequently during his childhood before settling in Miramar, Florida, and his parents divorced when he was a teenager.

Depp's mother gave him a guitar when he was 12, and music quickly became his main obsession. He dropped out of high school at 16 to pursue a career as a rock musician. His band, The Kids, achieved some regional success in Florida and eventually moved to Los Angeles, where the group struggled financially before breaking up.

Through his first wife, makeup artist Lori Anne Allison, Depp met Nicolas Cage. Cage encouraged him to try acting and helped arrange an introduction with an agent, setting Depp on an entirely different career path.

Career Beginnings and "21 Jump Street"

Depp made his film debut as Glen Lantz in Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." He followed with smaller roles, including an appearance in Oliver Stone's "Platoon," before landing the part that made him famous.

Also in 1990, Depp starred in Tim Burton's "Edward Scissorhands" opposite Winona Ryder. The critical and commercial success established Depp as a movie star and began one of the most famous actor-director collaborations in modern Hollywood.

Throughout the 1990s, Depp consistently chose idiosyncratic projects over obvious blockbuster vehicles. He starred in "Benny & Joon," "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," "Ed Wood," "Don Juan DeMarco," "Dead Man," "Donnie Brasco," and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas." Personal Life

Depp married Lori Anne Allison in 1983, and they divorced in 1985. During the 1980s, he was engaged to actresses Jennifer Grey and Sherilyn Fenn. He later became engaged to his "Edward Scissorhands" co-star Winona Ryder and famously had "Winona Forever" tattooed on his arm; after they separated, he altered the tattoo to read "Wino Forever."

From 1994 to 1998, Depp dated supermodel Kate Moss. In 1998, he began a relationship with French actress and singer Vanessa Paradis after meeting her while filming "The Ninth Gate" in France. They never married but remained together for roughly 14 years and had two children, actress Lily-Rose Depp and son Jack Depp, before separating in 2012.

After separating from Paradis, Depp began a relationship with actress Amber Heard, whom he had met while filming "The Rum Diary." They married in February 2015. Heard filed for divorce in May 2016 and obtained a temporary restraining order, alleging that Depp had been verbally and physically abusive. Depp denied the allegations. Their divorce was finalized in January 2017, with Depp agreeing to pay Heard $7 million.

Defamation Lawsuits

After the divorce, Heard announced that she would donate her $7 million settlement to Children's Hospital Los Angeles and the ACLU. The extent and timing of those donations later became a contentious issue. During the 2022 Virginia trial, the ACLU testified that it had received about $1.3 million toward Heard's $3.5 million pledge from several sources, while Heard said she still intended to complete her pledges.

In 2018, Depp sued News Group Newspapers, publisher of "The Sun," over an article that referred to him as a "wife beater." The case went to trial in London in 2020, with both Depp and Heard testifying for several days. In November 2020, the judge ruled against Depp, finding that the newspaper had proved the substance of its allegation under the civil standard and accepting 12 of 14 alleged incidents. Depp was denied permission for a further appeal in 2021.

Separately, Depp sued Heard for $50 million in Virginia over a 2018 "Washington Post" op-ed in which she described herself as a public figure representing domestic abuse without naming him. Depp argued that readers understood the piece to refer to their marriage. Heard denied defaming him and filed a $100 million counterclaim based on statements made by Depp attorney Adam Waldman.

The six-week trial began in April 2022 and became a global media spectacle. Depp testified that he had never abused Heard and alleged that he was the victim of violence during their relationship. Heard maintained that Depp had abused her.

On June 1, 2022, the jury found Heard liable for defamation on all three statements at issue in Depp's case and awarded him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages. Virginia's punitive-damages cap reduced the latter amount to $350,000. The jury also found Depp liable for one defamatory statement made by Waldman and awarded Heard $2 million.

Both sides appealed before reaching a settlement in December 2022. Heard's insurer agreed to pay Depp $1 million, ending the litigation. Depp later directed the settlement money to several charities.

Financial Situation

For much of Depp's career, his finances were managed by The Management Group, operated by Joel and Robert Mandel. In 2017, Depp sued the company, accusing his former managers of gross mismanagement and fraud. He alleged that TMG had caused him to lose tens of millions of dollars, accumulated more than $40 million in debt without his knowledge, failed to pay taxes on time, made unauthorized loans, and overpaid for services.

TMG countersued and offered a dramatically different explanation. According to the company, Depp had earned roughly $650 million during the previous 13 years but maintained such an extravagant lifestyle that he periodically lacked enough liquid cash to cover his expenses. TMG alleged that his lifestyle cost more than $2 million per month.

The allegations produced one of the most astonishing celebrity-spending inventories ever made public. TMG claimed Depp spent more than $75 million acquiring, improving, and furnishing 14 residences around the world. It alleged that approximately 40 employees cost around $300,000 per month, security cost another $150,000 per month, private-air travel ran as high as $200,000 per month, and wine cost tens of thousands of dollars per month.

The company also pointed to a luxury yacht, dozens of vehicles, 12 storage facilities containing memorabilia, around 70 collectible guitars, and an enormous art collection with works by artists including Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Gustav Klimt, and Amedeo Modigliani.

Perhaps the most famous expense involved Depp's friend Hunter S. Thompson. TMG originally alleged that Depp spent around $3 million on the elaborate 2005 memorial in which Thompson's ashes were fired from a cannon atop a 153-foot tower. Depp later said the ceremony actually cost him approximately $5 million.

Depp disputed TMG's characterization of his finances and argued that how he chose to spend his own money did not excuse alleged misconduct by his managers. The two sides ultimately settled their litigation in 2018.

Notable Salaries and Career Earnings

Depp's earnings history explains how he was able to finance such an extraordinary lifestyle. While starring on "21 Jump Street," he reportedly earned as much as $45,000 per episode. By the mid-1990s, his film salaries had reached the millions. He earned $5 million for "Nick of Time" in 1995 and another $5 million for "Donnie Brasco" in 1997.

For 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," Depp earned approximately $10 million. His base salary for "Dead Man's Chest" jumped to $20 million, and backend participation reportedly added another $40 million, bringing his total compensation for the sequel to around $60 million. He reportedly earned another $55 million from the third "Pirates" film.

Across the franchise, Depp's salaries and backend participation generated more than $300 million. Few actors in Hollywood history have earned more money from a single character.

Depp also negotiated an enormously lucrative backend arrangement for 2010's "Alice in Wonderland." After the movie grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, his compensation reportedly reached $55 million, making it one of the largest single-film acting paydays ever recorded.

Other reported salaries include $15 million for "The Rum Diary," $7.5 million for "Rango," $18 million for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and $20 million for "The Tourist."

In 2020, Depp was set to receive $16 million for the third "Fantastic Beasts" film. His contract reportedly guaranteed his compensation even if the studio chose not to use him. Warner Bros. asked him to leave the project after his UK libel loss, but Depp still received the salary.

At his peak, Depp often negotiated deals combining $20 million upfront salaries with substantial backend participation. Those arrangements, along with endorsements and other income, allowed his annual earnings to exceed $100 million in particularly strong years.

Real Estate and Houses

Hollywood Hills: Depp's longtime primary Los Angeles compound is made up of five contiguous properties spanning roughly 2.75 acres. The main mansion measures a little over 7,000 square feet with eight bedrooms and ten bathrooms. Across the entire compound, there are believed to be dozens of bedrooms.

Los Angeles Penthouses: Johnny previously owned five neighboring penthouses in downtown Los Angeles' landmark Eastern Columbia Building. He acquired the units between 2007 and 2008 for a combined $7.2 million and treated parts of the collection as a single sprawling residence, connecting several apartments with doorways while using others as guest and studio spaces. He sold the five units in 2017 for a combined $10.9 million after previously listing them for $12.8 million.

Kentucky: Depp purchased a 41-acre horse farm in Lexington, Kentucky, for $950,000 in 1995. He sold it in 2001 for $1 million, then repurchased it in 2005 for $2 million as a home for his mother. She lived there until her death in 2016. Depp sold the property in 2020 for $1.35 million.

Côte d'Azur: Depp and Vanessa Paradis acquired a sprawling estate near Plan-de-la-Tour, roughly 17 miles from Saint-Tropez, in 2001. They reportedly spent around $10 million renovating the approximately 37-acre property, which includes an entire collection of centuries-old stone buildings resembling a private Provençal village.

The estate contains a roughly 4,300-square-foot main house plus guest cottages and staff buildings, with around 12 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms across more than 10,000 square feet of living space. Amenities include a swimming pool, dining pavilion, vineyard, gardens, orchards, and walking paths.

Depp listed the estate for more than $25 million in 2015 and later sought roughly $55 million.

Paris: Depp and Paradis also maintained property in the Paris area during their relationship, including a residence in the suburb of Meudon. Paradis was widely reported to have retained the property following their separation.

Bahamas: Johnny owns a roughly 45-acre private island in the Bahamas. He reportedly purchased Little Hall's Pond Cay after filming the first "Pirates of the Caribbean." The island features six beaches, which Depp named after people important to him, as well as a private residence and harbor. His former 156-foot yacht, Vajoliroja, was once docked there.
