Édgar Vivar is a Mexican actor and comedian who has a net worth of $4 million. Édgar Vivar is best known for his roles on the Mexican sketch comedy show "Chespirito" and the sitcoms "El Chavo del Ocho" and "El Chapulín Colorado." On the big screen, he has acted in such films as "El Chanfle" and "El Chanfle 2," "The Orphanage," "Overboard," "The Mighty Victoria," and "El roomie."

Early Life

Édgar Vivar was born on December 28, 1948 in Mexico City, Mexico to Celia and Ángel. As a teenager, he acted on stage and toured the United States.

Television Career

In 1971, Vivar began appearing on the sketch comedy series "Chespirito," created by and starring the comedian of the same name. Vivar played the characters Señor Barriga and El Botija. He left the show in 1973 and joined the cast of Chespirito's new sitcom, "El Chavo del Ocho." Vivar reprised his role as Señor Barriga on the show, and also played Barriga's son Ñoño. He remained on the show until 1979. During the same span of time he was on "El Chavo del Ocho," Vivar appeared on another show by Chespirito, the superhero comedy series "El Chapulín Colorado." After leaving those shows, he joined the cast of the rebooted "Chespirito" in 1980. On this second version of the show, Vivar played such new characters as Doña Ramona, Oliver Hardy, and a number of villains. Vivar left the program due to obesity-related health issues in 1992, but he eventually returned and remained on the show until its conclusion in 1995. However, having undergone weight-loss surgery, he retired all of his characters who were characterized by their weight.

Two years after the end of "Chespirito," Vivar tried his hand at telenovelas with a role on "Alguna vez tendremos alas." He subsequently starred on "Navidad fabuloja." In 2005, Vivar had success with his role as Don Pedro on the Argentinian telenovela "Amarte así," which was a big hit in South America, Spain, and the United States. It later became popular in Haiti. Vivar's other notable television credits include a recurring role on the Mexican telenovela "Para volver a amar," which ran from 2010 to 2011, and a guest role on Eugenio Derbez's Mexican sitcom "La familia P. Luche" in 2012.

Film Career

Vivar made his debut on the big screen playing Dr. Nájera in the 1979 comedy film "El Chanfle," starring Chespirito. He went on to reprise his role in the 1982 sequel "El Chanfle 2." Vivar subsequently appeared in Chespirito's crime comedy "Don ratón y don ratero," released in 1983. Also that year, he was in the adventure drama "El mas valiente del mundo." In 1984, Vivar played Feldwebel Erstarren in the international co-production "Frankenstein's Great Aunt Tillie." After barely appearing on the big screen in the 1990s, Vivar reemerged as a more prominent international actor in the new millennium, starting with a small part in the 2006 Western action comedy "Bandidas." The year after that, he played Professor Leo Balabán in J. A. Bayona's acclaimed supernatural horror film "The Orphanage." Vivar was subsequently in the Chilean-Mexican film "All Inclusive," released in 2008.

Vivar starred in the short film "Juan y la Borrega" in 2011. Returning to feature films in 2015, he played a psychiatric hospital director in the Peruvian horror film "Cementerio general 2." In 2018, Vivar played a gastroenterologist in the American romantic comedy "Overboard," a gender-flipped remake of the 1987 original. Vivar went on to star in the 2021 Mexican adventure film "The Mighty Victoria," the directorial debut of Raúl Ramón. After that, he appeared in the 2023 Peruvian mystery comedy "Soy inocente." In 2024, Vivar played the character Homemade in the Mexican romantic comedy "El roomie," starring Fiona Palomo and José Eduardo Derbez.

Weight Loss

Having struggled with serious heart issues due to his obesity, Vivar received therapy at a weight-loss clinic and underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2008. He lost around 165 pounds, and has since become an advocate for physical health and fitness.
