Regarded as one of the leading South Indian actresses of the 2000s, Asin starred in such hit films as "Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi," "M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi," "Ghajini," "Varalaru," and "Ready." She won many accolades for her performances, including two Filmfare Awards South, four South Indian International Movie Awards, and the prestigious Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu government.

Early Life and Education

Asin Thottumkal was born on October 26, 1985 in Kochi, India into a Syro-Malabar Catholic family. Her mother, Seline, is a surgeon, and her father, Joseph, is a former CBI officer. Growing up, Asin attended Naval Public School. She then went to St. Teresa's School, followed by St. Teresa's College. Asin graduated from the latter with a bachelor's degree in English literature.

Film Career

At the age of 15, Asin made her film debut in the 2001 Malayalam film "Narendran Makan Jayakanthan Vaka." She had her breakthrough two years later in the Telugu sports drama "Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi," for which she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu. For her second Telugu film, "Sivamani 9848022338," Asin won the Santosham Best Actress Award. She appeared in two more Telugu films in 2004, "Lakshmi Narasimha" and "Gharshana." The same year, Asin made her Tamil film debut in "M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi," a remake of her previous Telugu film "Amma Nanna O Tamila Ammayi." Now a name in Tamil cinema, Asin appeared in four Tamil-language films in 2005: "Ullam Ketkumae," "Sivakasi," "Majaa," and "Ghajini." For her performance as young model Kalpana in "Ghajini," she won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil. Asin had further success in 2006 with the Tamil-language "Varalaru" and her final Telugu film, "Annavaram." In 2007, she starred in "Aalwar," a commercial failure, and "Pokkiri" and "Vel," both commercial successes. Kicking off 2008, Asin played dual roles in the epic science-fiction action film "Dasavathaaram," for which she won the ITFA Best Actress Award.

At the end of 2008, Asin made her Bollywood debut in the blockbuster "Ghajini," a remake of her Tamil film of the same name. The film was a huge success, becoming the first Bollywood film to make over ₹1 billion at the domestic box office. Asin earned many accolades for her reprised performance as model Kalpana, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She would continue appearing in Hindi-language films after that, starting with "London Dreams" in 2009. However, that film was a commercial disappointment, and Asin didn't appear in any films in 2010. She returned in 2011 with her final Tamil film, "Kaavalan," before starring in the Bollywood film "Ready" opposite Salman Khan. "Ready" was a massive hit, grossing over ₹1.84 billion worldwide. Asin had another ₹1 billion hit with the 2012 Bollywood film "Housefull 2." Further successes followed with "Bol Bachchan" and "Khiladi 786," making 2012 Asin's most commercially successful year in Hindi cinema. After three years away from the big screen, Asin returned in 2015 for what would be her final film, "All is Well." The film was only moderately successful, and Asin retired from acting the following year after getting married.
