Oliver Haarmann earned his fortune as a founding partner of Searchlight Capital Partners, a global private investment firm that manages approximately $17 billion in assets. Before launching Searchlight, he spent roughly 12 years at KKR, where he became a senior partner and helped develop the firm's European private equity operation.

Haarmann co-founded Searchlight in 2010 with Eric Zinterhofer and Erol Uzumeri. Carl Ludwig Oliver Haarmann was born in 1967 and is a German citizen.

He attended Brown University, earning bachelor's degrees in history and international relations in 1990. He later attended Harvard Business School and earned his MBA in 1996.

Haarmann worked for investment firms in the United States and Europe before entering private equity full-time.

KKR

Haarmann joined Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, better known as KKR, in the late 1990s. The legendary private equity firm was co-founded by Henry Kravis, George Roberts, and Jerome Kohlberg.

Based in London, Haarmann helped build KKR's European business during a period when American private equity firms were rapidly expanding their presence overseas. Regulatory filings show that he was an executive of KKR's London operation beginning in 1999 and became a member of KKR & Co. in 2006.

He eventually rose to senior partner. By the time he left in 2010, Haarmann had spent approximately 12 years with KKR and had participated in the expansion of the firm's European leveraged-buyout business from a relatively small operation into one of the region's major private equity platforms.

Searchlight Capital Partners

In 2010, Haarmann co-founded Searchlight Capital Partners with Eric Zinterhofer and Erol Uzumeri.

Searchlight established offices in New York, London, and Toronto and later expanded into Miami. Rather than limiting itself to conventional buyouts, the firm developed a flexible strategy encompassing equity, debt, structured investments, and complex corporate situations.

Its first flagship private equity fund closed in 2012 with more than $860 million in commitments. Searchlight Capital II raised more than $1.9 billion in 2015, while Searchlight Capital III closed with $3.4 billion in 2020.

The firm continued raising additional flagship funds, co-investment vehicles, and other pools of capital. Searchlight eventually grew to approximately $17 billion in assets under management.

Regulatory filings identify Haarmann, Zinterhofer, and Uzumeri as the three members controlling Searchlight's general partner. The founders jointly oversee the firm's strategy and operations. Haarmann serves on Searchlight's Investment Committee, Operating Committee, and Valuation Committee.

Investments

Haarmann has served on the boards of numerous current and former Searchlight portfolio companies.

Searchlight's investments have included British footwear company Hunter Boot, outdoor advertising company Ocean Outdoor, Italian broadband provider EOLO, insurance intermediary Global Risk Partners, and telecommunications and media businesses across Europe and North America.

The firm has also participated in major transactions involving companies such as Univision and Liberty Latin America and has invested heavily in communications infrastructure.

Searchlight's strategy has increasingly expanded beyond its early concentration in telecommunications, media, and technology into financial services, business services, industrial companies, consumer businesses, and other sectors.

New York Islanders

Haarmann expanded into professional sports ownership when he acquired a minority interest in the New York Islanders.

The NHL officially lists him among the team's co-owners alongside controlling owner Scott Malkin, Jon Ledecky, Dewey Shay, and John Collins.

Haarmann's precise ownership percentage has not been publicly disclosed. The Islanders were valued at approximately $2.1 billion in late 2025, up dramatically from the $485 million valuation associated with the ownership group's original acquisition of control.

The team plays at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, which opened in 2021.

Philanthropy

Haarmann has devoted considerable time to education and philanthropy.

He serves as chairman of IntoUniversity, a British nonprofit organization that helps students from disadvantaged backgrounds gain access to higher education. The organization operates dozens of learning centers and serves tens of thousands of young people.

Haarmann has also served on Brown University's governing board and has been involved with Harvard Business School as an Executive Fellow.

Personal Life

Haarmann was previously married to hedge fund executive Mala Gaonkar. The former couple have two children. Gaonkar later married Talking Heads co-founder David Byrne.

In 2024, Haarmann began a relationship with Reese Witherspoon. The relationship became public after the pair were spotted together in New York, and they subsequently appeared together at events and while traveling.

Witherspoon's relationship with Haarmann was her first widely reported romance following the end of her marriage to talent agent Jim Toth. Haarmann and Witherspoon made their first red-carpet appearance as a couple in 2026.
