What is Cathie Wood's Net Worth and Salary?

Cathie Wood is an American investor, money manager, and entrepreneur who has a net worth of $250 million.

Cathie Wood is best known as the founder, CEO, and chief investment officer of ARK Invest, the investment management firm behind a family of exchange-traded funds focused on disruptive innovation. Her best-known fund is the ARK Innovation ETF, better known by its ticker symbol, ARKK.

Wood became one of the most famous investors in the world during the pandemic-era tech boom, when her aggressive bets on companies such as Tesla, Coinbase, Roku, Zoom, and other high-growth technology names made ARK one of the hottest firms on Wall Street. At the height of that run, Cathie Wood's net worth was $400 million. But ARK's funds were hit hard when speculative growth stocks collapsed from their pandemic peaks. By mid-2022, with ARKK trading around $40, Wood's fortune was estimated at roughly $140 million to $150 million. ARKK later recovered and by mid-2026, while trading around $77, her net worth had risen back up to $250 million.

Early Life

Cathie Wood was born Catherine Duddy Wood on November 26, 1955, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents were immigrants from Ireland, and her father served in the Irish Army and the United States Air Force before becoming a radar systems engineer.

Wood attended Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school in Los Angeles. She then enrolled at the University of Southern California, where she studied finance and economics. She graduated summa cum laude in 1981. At USC, one of her professors was economist Arthur Laffer, who became an important mentor early in her career.

Early Career

Wood began her career at Capital Group, where she worked as an assistant economist. In 1980, she joined Jennison Associates, where she spent nearly two decades as an economist, analyst, portfolio manager, and managing director. Her work focused on thematic investing and identifying long-term shifts in technology and the economy.

In the late 1990s, Wood co-founded Tupelo Capital Management, a hedge fund based in New York. She later joined AllianceBernstein, where she served as chief investment officer of global thematic strategies. During her years there, she developed the investment philosophy that would eventually define ARK: instead of organizing portfolios around traditional sectors, she focused on companies positioned to benefit from technological disruption.

Founding ARK Invest

Cathie Wood founded ARK Invest in 2014. The name ARK stands for Active Research Knowledge, though the firm also reflected Wood's interest in investing with conviction in transformative ideas.

ARK launched with a different model from many traditional investment firms. Its research was heavily focused on open collaboration, public-facing reports, and long-term themes such as artificial intelligence, robotics, autonomous vehicles, genomic sequencing, blockchain, financial technology, and next-generation internet companies.

The firm's flagship ETF, ARKK, gave ordinary investors an easy way to invest in Wood's highest-conviction disruptive technology ideas. Other ARK funds focused on genomics, fintech, robotics, autonomous technology, and space exploration.

ARK Innovation And Wall Street Fame

Wood's fame exploded in 2020 when ARKK posted an enormous gain during the pandemic tech boom. Her early and outspoken bullishness on Tesla became one of her signature calls. At a time when many investors thought Tesla was wildly overvalued, Wood repeatedly argued that the company could become one of the most valuable businesses in the world.

As Tesla and other growth stocks surged, ARK attracted billions of dollars from investors. Wood became a regular presence on financial television and one of the most recognizable stock pickers in America. Her supporters saw her as a visionary investor willing to look years into the future. Her critics argued that ARK's funds were too concentrated in speculative, expensive companies that depended heavily on low interest rates and investor enthusiasm.

Both views were tested almost immediately.

Collapse And Rebound

After the pandemic-era boom, many of ARK's favorite stocks fell sharply. Rising interest rates, slowing growth, and a broad reset in technology valuations hit ARK particularly hard. ARKK traded around $125 in July 2021, then fell to around $40 by June 2022. That drop dramatically reduced Wood's estimated net worth.

At the peak of ARK's popularity, her net worth was $400 million. By June 2022, after ARKK had lost roughly two-thirds of its value from mid-2021, her net worth was estimated closer to $150 million.

By mid-2026, ARKK  recovered to around $77, which equated to a net worth of $250 million.

Investment Style

Wood is known for high-conviction, long-duration investing. She often argues that investors and analysts underestimate how quickly disruptive technologies can scale and how large their eventual markets can become.

Her strategy can produce dramatic gains when growth stocks are in favor, but it can also create steep losses during market downturns. ARK's portfolios have often been concentrated in volatile companies tied to emerging industries, including electric vehicles, crypto platforms, telemedicine, streaming, automation, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.

That volatility has made Wood a polarizing figure. To fans, she is one of the few prominent investors willing to make bold public forecasts about the future. To skeptics, her success has been too dependent on market cycles and momentum. Either way, she has built one of the most recognizable investing brands of the last decade.

Personal Life

Cathie Wood was previously married to Robert Wood, with whom she has three children. She has spoken publicly about the role of faith in her life and in her decision to leave a large institutional investing job to start ARK later in her career.

Wood's story is unusual in modern finance. She did not become a household name in her 20s or 30s. She founded ARK Invest when she was in her late 50s, then became one of the most famous money managers in the world well after many people would have been thinking about retirement. That late-career rise, combined with the spectacular boom-and-bust performance of ARK's flagship fund, has made Cathie Wood one of the most fascinating and debated investors on Wall Street.
