Richard Garfield is an American mathematician, inventor, and game designer who has a net worth of $10 million. Richard Garfield was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in June 1963. He is known for creating the collectible card game Magic: The Gathering which debuted in 1993. He has also designed games including Netrunner, Vampire: The Eternal Struggle, BattleTech, Star Wars Trading Card Game, Artifact, The Great Dalmuti, and the board game RoboRally. He is in the Adventure Gaming Hall of Fame as well as his game Magic.

He graduated with a computer mathematics degree and worked for Bell Laboratories. He designed RoboRally in 1985 and was asked to develop a game that would be cheaper to produce and more portable which is how he created Magic: The Gathering. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in combinatorial mathematics. Garfield has worked as a game designer for Electronic Arts as well as Microsoft and teaches the class The Characteristics of Games at the University of Washington.
