Early Life and Education
Patrick Tatopoulos was born on September 25, 1957 in Paris, France to a French mother and a Greek immigrant father. He studied art at the École d'Art Décoratif de Paris, the École des Arts Appliqués de Paris, and the École des Beaux-Arts.
Career Beginnings
Before getting into film, Tatopoulos worked in advertising, illustrated comic book covers, and raced motorcycles. He spent a decade in Greece and some time in Rome before moving to the United States in 1989 to further his career in the entertainment industry.
Film Career
Tatopoulos began doing design work for films in the early 1990s. Among his first credits were the music biopic "The Doors," the buddy cop action film "Showdown in Little Tokyo," and the Gothic horror film "Bram Stoker's Dracula." Tatopoulos subsequently worked on such films as "Stargate," "Se7en," "Jade," and "Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace." In the latter half of the decade, he was the production designer for the blockbusters "Independence Day" and "Godzilla" and also worked on "Dark City" and the family comedy "Stuart Little." Tatopoulos served as the namesake for Matthew Broderick's protagonist in "Godzilla," Dr. Nick Tatopoulos. He began the 21st century working on three science-fiction films: "Supernova," "Pitch Black," and "Battlefield Earth." After those, Tatopoulos designed for such films as "They," "Underworld," "Van Helsing," "The Chronicles of Riddick," "I, Robot," and "Alien vs. Predator." Tatopoulos was especially prolific in the second half of the '00s, when he designed for "Venom," "Silent Hill," "Crank," "Eragon," "The Messengers," "300," "Live Free or Die Hard," "I Am Legend," "10,000 BC," "Blood Creek," "Knowing," and "2012," among many other titles. He also made his directorial debut with the 2009 action horror film "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans," the third installment in the "Underworld" film series.

Tatopoulos returned to the "Underworld" series in 2012 to design for the fourth installment, "Underworld: Awakening." The same year, he worked on Len Wiseman's remake of the science-fiction action film "Total Recall" as well as the "Silent Hill" sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation 3D." In 2013, Tatopoulos designed for Zack Snyder's superhero film "Man of Steel" and David Twohy's science-fiction action film "Riddick," the third installment in the "Chronicles of Riddick" film series. He continued to work mostly on franchises over the ensuing years, lending his talents to "300: Rise of an Empire," Zach Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Justice League," and Disney's "Maleficent: Mistress of Evil." Tatopoulos reunited with Snyder in 2021 for "Zack Snyder's Justice League," the director's cut of the previous "Justice League." He went on to work on the science-fiction action film "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts" and the supernatural horror film "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," both in 2023. In 2024, Tatopoulos designed the dragon in the Netflix dark fantasy film "Damsel." He next worked on the third installment in the "Silent Hill" film series, "Return to Silent Hill," which came out in early 2026.
Television Career
For television, Tatopoulos contributed his designs to such series as "Space: Above and Beyond" and "Special Unit 2." He has also worked on some television films, including "Saint Sinner" and "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear." Beyond his work as a production designer, Tatopoulos served as a judge for the first three seasons of the Syfy reality competition show "Face Off" from 2011 to 2012. The show features prosthetic makeup artists who compete against each other to create prosthetic designs in the vein of horror, fantasy, and science-fiction media.
Personal Life
In 2015, Tatopoulos married actress McKenzie Westmore, the host of "Face Off." They had originally met working on the first season of the show.
