The son of João Moreira Salles, the founder of Casa Bancária Moreira Salles (Moreira Salles Banking House) in Pocos de Caldas, Walther Moreira Salles is regarded to be one of the pioneers in the modern Brazilian banking and financial industry. Born on May 28, 1912 in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, Brazil, he was just 21 when he became a partner in the bank in 1933. Some seven years later, the bank merged three regional banks, and was later renamed to União de Bancos Brasileiros (Unibanco).
