Peter Gilgan is a Canadian businessman who has a net worth of $1.8 billion. Following training as a chartered accountant, Peter Gilgan set up new-home builder Mattamy Homes in 1978, naming it after the two oldest of his eight children, Matt and Amy. Drawing his inspiration from the New Urbanism School of Design and tired of bland communities, Gilgan started humbly by building one new suburban home in Ontario, and later has gone on to build more than 60,000 homes in Canada and the United States.
The man behind the largest new-home builder in Canada today, Gilgan has established himself as a great philanthropist as well. His donation of CAD $40 million to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children in March 2012 is his latest philanthropic effort.
