What is José E. Feliciano's Net Worth?
José E. Feliciano is a Puerto Rican-American private equity investor and sports team owner who has a net worth of $4.5 billion. José E. Feliciano is not related to the "Feliz Navidad" singer José Feliciano.
Feliciano is best known as the co-founder and managing partner of Clearlake Capital Group, the investment firm he launched in 2006 with Behdad Eghbali. Clearlake began with just three employees and a $182 million inaugural fund before growing into a global alternative asset manager overseeing more than $185 billion.
Feliciano's fortune primarily comes from his ownership interest in Clearlake, along with decades of investment profits, carried interest and proceeds from transactions involving stakes in the management company. A 2018 deal in which outside investors bought a minority interest in Clearlake valued the firm at $4.2 billion and established Feliciano as a billionaire.
Feliciano has also become a significant sports investor. Clearlake is the controlling investor in English Premier League club Chelsea F.C., while Feliciano and Jones have personally invested in the Minnesota Timberwolves and other sports-related businesses and funds. In 2026, the couple led the ownership group that acquired control of the San Diego Padres at a record $3.9 billion franchise valuation. Feliciano was named the Padres' official MLB Control Person, while he and Jones jointly lead the ownership group.
Early Life and Education
José E. Feliciano was born and raised in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. He attended a small private school and later recalled that, before arriving at college, his exposure to the mainland United States had been limited.
Feliciano enrolled at Princeton University, where he studied mechanical and aerospace engineering. The transition was challenging. He has spoken about being self-conscious about his accent and struggling with demanding engineering coursework. He also held a work-study job in the Graduate College dining hall, walking across the Springdale Golf Club to get to work.
He eventually found his footing and graduated with high honors. Rather than pursue engineering, Feliciano entered finance. He later earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Wall Street and Early Career
Feliciano began his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs, working in the firm's mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance groups.
Following business school, he became a senior executive and chief financial officer of govWorks, an internet company created during the dot-com boom to allow people to pay government bills and conduct other municipal transactions online. The company ultimately collapsed during the technology bust.
Feliciano subsequently joined Tennenbaum Capital Partners, an alternative investment firm specializing in distressed debt and special situations. He rose to become a partner and member of its investment committee. His experience evaluating troubled companies and complex financial situations became central to the investment strategy he would later use at Clearlake.

Clearlake Capital
In 2006, Feliciano co-founded Clearlake Capital Group with Behdad Eghbali and Steven Chang. The firm launched with three employees and its first private equity fund raised $182 million.
Clearlake was designed to be flexible. Rather than exclusively making conventional leveraged buyouts, the firm could invest in companies undergoing financial, operational or structural change. Its principal areas of focus eventually became technology and software, industrial businesses and consumer companies.
The timing proved fortunate. When the global financial crisis struck in 2008, Clearlake was positioned to buy distressed and overlooked assets at deeply depressed prices.
The firm's funds expanded rapidly. Its second flagship fund raised $415 million. Fund III raised $789 million, followed by $1.48 billion for Fund IV and $3.6 billion for Fund V. By 2020, Clearlake managed roughly $25 billion. Two years later, that figure had grown to around $70 billion.
Clearlake's 2026 acquisition of Pathway Capital Management helped push total assets under management beyond $185 billion. That same year, Clearlake closed its eighth flagship private equity fund with $14.8 billion of commitments.
Feliciano and Eghbali remain Clearlake's managing partners.
Becoming a Billionaire
Clearlake's success made Feliciano enormously wealthy, but a 2018 transaction provided one of the clearest public measurements of that fortune.
Dyal Capital Partners and Goldman Sachs joined other investors in acquiring a minority interest in Clearlake's management company. The transaction valued Clearlake at approximately $4.2 billion and established both Feliciano and Eghbali as billionaires.
Forbes subsequently estimated Feliciano's fortune at $2.1 billion in 2020. His wealth climbed alongside Clearlake's assets, investment returns and the value of his interest in the firm.
It is important to distinguish Clearlake's $185 billion of assets under management from Feliciano's personal fortune. The overwhelming majority of that money belongs to the pensions, endowments, institutions and other investors whose capital Clearlake manages. Feliciano makes money through his ownership of the management company, management fees, carried interest, personal fund investments and other investments.
Sports Investments and the San Diego Padres
Sports have become an increasingly significant part of Feliciano's investment career.
In 2022, Clearlake participated in the consortium that acquired Chelsea F.C. Clearlake became the club's largest economic owner, and Feliciano became one of Chelsea's co-controlling owners.
Feliciano and Jones also became minority investors in the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves and have invested through sports-focused platforms including Arctos Sports Partners and Dyal HomeCourt Partners.
The couple explored purchasing several NFL franchises, including the Denver Broncos, before eventually turning their attention to Major League Baseball.
In 2026, Feliciano and Jones won a competitive bidding process for control of the San Diego Padres. The transaction valued the franchise at $3.9 billion, breaking the MLB record previously established by Steve Cohen's purchase of the New York Mets.
Feliciano and Jones acquired more than 40% of the Padres, with their controlling interest valued at roughly $1.7 billion. Other investors, including some existing Padres shareholders, own the remainder. Feliciano serves as the team's MLB Control Person, while he and Jones jointly lead the ownership group.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Feliciano met Kwanza Jones while both were students at Princeton. During Jones' senior year, Feliciano noticed her walking on crutches and offered to carry her books. They began dating the following year and married in 2002.
In 2014, they created the Kwanza Jones & José E. Feliciano Initiative, which functions as their family office and philanthropic and investment platform. Jones serves as CEO.
The couple donated $20 million to Princeton to help finance two adjoining residence halls bearing their names. At the time, it was the largest gift the university had received from Black and Latino donors.
Their real estate holdings have reflected their growing fortune as well. In 2023, Jones and Feliciano moved from a roughly $20 million Pacific Palisades mansion to a home overlooking Riviera Country Club reportedly valued at approximately $50 million.
