Early Life

Sheinelle Jones was born Sheinelle Marie Jones on April 19, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is the daughter of C. Darnell Jones II, who served as a judge of the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania and United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania before becoming a senior judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in 2021. Sheinelle's mother, teacher Sheila Kinnard, posted inspirational notes around the family's home, such as "If you can see it, you can be it." Jones studied at Wichita Brooks Middle Magnet School, then she graduated from Wichita Heights High School in 1996. As a high school student, she landed an internship at the local CBS affiliate KWCH-TV after her grandmother called a church friend who worked as a secretary at the station. Sheinelle graduated from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, a historically Black sorority.

Career

Jones' first job in broadcasting was at WICS in Springfield, Illinois, then she worked for KOKI-TV in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Next, she spent nearly a decade hosting the Emmy-winning show "Good Day Philadelphia" on WTXF-TV. Sheinelle joined the NBC program "Today" in October 2014 as an anchor for "Weekend Today," and in early 2019, she began co-hosting the third hour of "Today" with Al Roker, Dylan Dreyer, and Craig Melvin. In late 2019, Jones decided to leave "Weekend Today," stating, "As much as I love my Saturday 'Today' family, this is going to be my last day anchoring the show. Since I'm so busy on the weekdays, I thought, you know what, I should probably see those three children that I have at home. They're 7-year-old twins and a 10-year-old — Kayin, Clara and Uche — every time I look up, I feel like they look like they're a little bit older so I'm going to be home with them on Saturday mornings." Personal Life

Sheinelle married Uche Ojeh on September 1, 2007. The couple met at Northwestern University and welcomed three children together. Jones took family medical leave in November 2024, and she later explained on social media that she was "taking time to deal with a family health matter." On May 23, 2025, her "Today" co-hosts announced that Ojeh had passed away from glioblastoma. Uche had been diagnosed with the aggressive form of brain cancer in 2023. Sheinelle returned to "Today" four months after her husband's death, and in a pre-taped interview with Savannah Guthrie, she stated, "My heart is shattered in a million pieces. The life that I've known since I was 19 is no more. I've always wanted kids and I have three kids of my own now and they've lost their dad." Jones added, "Cancer doesn't have to steal our joy. We can get up, we can get out of bed, and we can go to work, we can go to school, we can squeeze the most out of the days that we have. And honestly, I feel like Uche's heartbeat lives on in mine. So I owe it to him to just squeeze the most I can out of this thing."
