He was born in Houston, Texas on October 19, 1926. He graduated from St Thomas High School and he earned a B.A from the University of Texas in 1950. In 1953 he received his J.D from The University of Texas School of Law. The University created the Joseph D. Jamail Centennial Chair in Law and Advocacy in his honor in 1986. Some of Jamail's major cases include representing Pennzoil in their 1985 lawsuit against Texaco. He won the case and received a contingency fee of $335 million. He was known as a generous man giving many large donations to places such as Rice University and The University of Texas at Austin. UT named their football field Joe Jamail Field in his honor. There's also the Joseph D. Jamail, Jr. Pavilion at The University of Texas School of Law and the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.. The University has even erected two statues on campus in his honor. Joe was a widower and had has 3 children. Joe Jamail died on December 23, 2015 in Houston, Texas.
