After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in biochemistry, he went on to the University of Hawaii for medical school. He eventually chose to shift his focus and left medical school. He graduated from Loyola University Law School and began a career as a lawyer a few years later. He worked part-time for a vitamin company, and soon decided to shift his focus from law to full-time vitamin development. He launched his own company, ProCaps Laboratories in 1979.

In 2010, he was involved in a high-profile lawsuit, when he publicly criticized the QVC for carrying a particular brand of vitamin. He eventually yanked his own inventory from the network and jumped ship to HSN, where he has been ever since.
