What is Katrina Lake's Net Worth and Salary?
Katrina Lake is an American entrepreneur and businesswoman who has a net worth of $60 million.
Katrina Lake is best known as the founder of Stitch Fix, the online personal styling company that combined human stylists, customer data, and e-commerce logistics to create a new way to shop for clothes. Lake launched Stitch Fix in 2011 while she was finishing her MBA at Harvard, eventually building it into a public company with billions in annual revenue at its peak.
Lake's net worth has fluctuated dramatically because so much of her fortune has been tied to Stitch Fix stock. During the pandemic e-commerce boom, Stitch Fix shares briefly surged above $96, pushing Lake into billionaire territory. That moment did not last. As the company's growth slowed, the stock collapsed from its pandemic high. Stitch Fix now trades at around $4 per share, giving the company a market capitalization of roughly $550 million. Lake remains a major figure at the company as founder and executive chairperson, though she no longer serves as CEO. Matt Baer, who joined the company in 2023, is the chief executive.
Salary
Katrina Lake's compensation at Stitch Fix has varied significantly since the company went public in 2017. Like many founder-CEOs, the headline number in any given year was driven less by cash salary and more by the timing of stock and option awards.
In the years after Stitch Fix's IPO, Lake's base salary as CEO eventually settled at $650,000 per year. Her total annual compensation, however, could swing dramatically depending on equity grants. In 2017, the year Stitch Fix went public, Lake's total compensation peaked at approximately $9.1 million, with the vast majority coming from stock and option awards tied to the IPO. In 2018, without a major new equity package, her compensation normalized to roughly $600,000.
Lake received another large equity grant in 2019, bringing her total compensation for that year to approximately $5.3 million. In 2020 and 2021, her CEO compensation returned to a lower range, generally between $450,000 and $640,000 annually.
Lake stepped down as CEO in August 2021 and became executive chairperson. She briefly returned as interim CEO in early 2023, but her compensation in the post-CEO period was lower than during her years running the company day to day. Her gross remuneration for 2023 was reported at approximately $476,000.
In more recent years, Lake's compensation has been reduced to reflect her role as founder and executive chairperson rather than full-time CEO. Recent proxy data for fiscal 2025 lists her total compensation at $80,000 in cash.
Early Life
Katrina Lake was born on December 24, 1982, in San Francisco, California. Her mother was a Japanese immigrant and public school teacher, and her father was a doctor. Lake initially considered following her father into medicine, but her interests gradually shifted toward business, retail, and consumer behavior.
She attended Stanford University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in economics in 2005. After Stanford, Lake worked in consulting and venture capital, including roles that exposed her to the retail industry. She later enrolled at Harvard Business School, where the idea for Stitch Fix began to take shape.
Founding Stitch Fix
Lake founded Stitch Fix in 2011 from her apartment in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The concept was simple but unusual at the time: customers would fill out an online style profile, pay a styling fee, and receive a curated box of clothing selected for them. They could keep what they liked, return what they did not, and apply the styling fee toward purchases.
In the earliest days, Lake personally surveyed customers, picked out clothes, delivered boxes, and collected $20 checks. The service appealed to busy women who wanted a more convenient way to shop but did not want to browse endlessly online or in stores.
A key part of Lake's insight was that fashion retail could be improved with data. Stitch Fix was never simply a subscription box business. Its model relied on combining human judgment with algorithms that tracked customer preferences, sizing, buying behavior, returns, and feedback. A stylist could then use that data to assemble a personalized "Fix" for each customer.
Data Science And Growth
One of Lake's most important early hires was Eric Colson, a former Netflix data science executive. Colson helped Stitch Fix build the algorithmic backbone that became central to the company's identity. Stitch Fix gathered information on body measurements, patterns, fit preferences, purchase history, and style feedback, then used those insights to improve future recommendations.
The company grew quickly. Stitch Fix expanded beyond women's clothing into men's, kids, maternity, petite, and plus-size categories. It also built a nationwide network of remote stylists, allowing the company to scale while keeping a human layer in the shopping experience.
By 2017, Stitch Fix had become one of the most closely watched companies in e-commerce. Lake took the company public in November of that year, making her one of the youngest female founders to lead an IPO. The offering valued Stitch Fix at around $1.6 billion and raised approximately $120 million for the company.
Rise To Billionaire & Loss of Billionaire Status
Stitch Fix became one of the standout retail stories of the pandemic period. As consumers shifted more of their shopping online, the company's stock surged. In January 2021, Stitch Fix shares reached an intraday peak of $96.92. At that level, Lake's roughly 10% stake was worth more than $1 billion, briefly making her one of the few self-made female billionaires in the United States.
That valuation proved temporary. Stitch Fix struggled to sustain its pandemic momentum, and the company's stock fell sharply as growth slowed, customer acquisition became more difficult, and investors questioned whether the business could return to its earlier trajectory.
By May 2022, Stitch Fix shares had fallen to around $8.62, wiping out much of Lake's paper fortune. At that time, her net worth was estimated at just over $200 million, down from hundreds of millions more a year earlier.
By June 2026, Stitch Fix was trading at around $4 per share, giving the company a market capitalization of approximately $550 million. Based on recent company filings, Lake continues to own millions of Stitch Fix shares and maintains significant voting power through the company's dual-class stock structure. Her remaining equity is worth tens of millions of dollars at current trading levels, a major decline from the paper value of her stake during the 2021 peak.

Stock Sales & Current Ownership Stake
As of her most recent SEC Form 4 filings from early 2026 (following a transaction on February 2, 2026), Katrina Lake indirectly owns 7,196,553 shares of Stitch Fix. These shares are primarily held through The Katrina M. Lake Revocable Trust. Using a $4 price per share, her remaining shares are worth around $28 million.
Financial tracking platforms estimate she has sold approximately 3.3 million shares since 2021, yielding an estimated $46.9 million.
Lake continues to systematically convert Class B shares to Class A and sell them under a pre-arranged 10b5-1 trading plan. Recent notable transactions include a $3.08 million sell-off in July 2025 and a $513,822 sale in January 2026.
She executed several large sales before 2021 as well, including a single transaction in January 2021 where she sold 131,327 shares for $10.6 million.
Leadership Changes
Lake stepped down as CEO of Stitch Fix in 2021 and became executive chairperson. Elizabeth Spaulding succeeded her as CEO but later resigned during a difficult period for the company. Lake returned as interim CEO in January 2023 while the board searched for a permanent replacement.
In June 2023, Stitch Fix named Matt Baer, a former Macy's executive, as CEO. Lake remained executive chairperson, continuing to provide founder-level guidance while no longer running day-to-day operations.
Personal Life
Katrina Lake is married to investment professional John Clifford. They have children together and live in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lake has also served on several corporate and nonprofit boards, including roles connected to consumer technology, beauty, and U.S.-Japan relations.
