Early Life
Taylor Townsend was born on April 16, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois, to Sheila and Gary. She has an older sister named Symone who played tennis in college. Townsend began playing tennis when she was six, and when she was eight, she moved with her family to Atlanta, Georgia, to train under Donald Young Sr. The family moved again, to Boca Raton, Florida, when Townsend was 14. There, she joined the USTA development program. After her time there, Townsend divided her time training in Chicago and the Washington, DC area.
Junior Career
In 2012, Townsend won both the junior singles and doubles titles at the Australian Open. A few months later, she won the Easter Bowl, boosting her to number one in the ITF junior rankings. Townsend continued her success in 2012 by winning junior doubles titles at both Wimbledon and the US Open. For her incredible season, she was named the ITF Junior World Champion, becoming the first American girl to earn that honor since Gretchen Rush in 1982. Townsend remained on the junior tour in 2013, reaching the singles final at Wimbledon but failing to win any major titles.
Professional Beginnings
At the age of 14 in 2010, Townsend entered her first professional-level tournament. The next year, she competed in the doubles event at the US Open and reached the third round with her partner Jessica Pegula. Townsend made her WTA Tour singles debut at the 2013 BNP Paribas Open, where she earned her first tour-level victory by defeating Lucie Hradecká. Townsend had her professional breakout season in 2014, when she won the singles and doubles titles at both Charlottesville and Indian Harbour Beach on the ITF Circuit. She subsequently made her major singles debut at the French Open, where she reached the third round. After a disappointing 2015 season in which she won just two ITF Circuit matches and none on the WTA Tour, Townsend came back strong in 2016, winning five ITF doubles titles with Asia Muhammad and three more by the end of the year. In 2017, Townsend claimed three ITF doubles titles and three singles titles, including the $80k Waco Showdown. She ended the year back in the top 100 of the ITF rankings. In 2018, after winning three ITF singles titles, Townsend reached a new career-high ranking of No. 73.
