Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor was born in Lomé, Togo, on February 26, 1984, and raised in an apartment without electricity or bathrooms. To shower, his family would go to the beach. He spent most of his youth attending the Sporting Club de Lomé and playing for OC Agaza. Then scouts from Metz took notice of him and brought him to France in 1999. In 2001, he made his Ligue 1 debut.
After a season in Ligue 2 in which he scored 13 goals in 34 matches, Emmanuel Adebayor moved on. From 2003 to 2006, he played for Monaco. During that time, he helped Monaco reach the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final. In 2006, he signed on with Arsenal where he was nicknamed "Baby Kanu" by the club's manager for his resemblance to player Nwankwo Kanu.
