He won an Olympic gold medal in the flyweight division at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. Gamboa also won a gold medal at the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan American Games. He won bronze medals at the 2005 World Amateur Championships and 2006 Central American and Caribbean Games and a silver medal at the 2005 World Cup in Moscow. Gamboa defeated Alexan Manvelyan in his professional boxing debut in April 2007. Gamboa's first loss came from Terence Crawford in June 2014 for the WBO Lightweight title. His last fight was a victory against Joel Montes de Oca in November 2011 to bring his professional record to 24-1. Gamboa was stripped of the WBA and IBF Featherweight Championships.
